The texts that follow present the notion, central to Jewish understanding of how God communicates to the people, that God gave both a written and an oral Torah. The Written Torah is what we know as the 5 Books of Moses, or the Pentateuch; ie the first five books of the Bible. The Oral Torah is embodied in the conversations, interpretations, and arguments about the Torah that has taken place over the generations. The core of these conversations have been compiled in the Mishnah, the Talmud, and the Midrash.
