The history of Jewish texts is a testament to the constant evolution of technology, all of which have played their part in making learning possible — from manuscripts to printing presses to digital libraries. Today, Sefaria is engaging AI with the same seriousness, taking a design-driven approach: testing, learning, and refining. We carefully experiment, gather user feedback, and build only what supports learning, while preserving the integrity and sanctity of the texts. The Pirkei Avot Learning Guide is a supplemental tool for exploring Pirkei Avot, a third-century compilation of rabbinic teachings and ethical maxims. An interactive interface allows users to view pre-written questions and answers about the text, summarized from classic commentaries on Pirkei Avot by an AI model and then reviewed by the Sefaria team. In the Sefaria Library, users can use the Resource Panel to locate user-created Sheets from Voices on Sefaria that relate to a selected passage of text. When viewing Sheets related to a specific passage from the Library, users then have the option to sort Sheets by relevance — a feature that utilizes large language models (LLMs) to assess the content’s relevance to the passage at hand. Alternatively, results can be sorted in two non-AI powered ways: by number of views or by publication date. Since 2023, our team of text specialists has experimented with translation using various AI models, assessing for accuracy and fidelity to the original text. In 2026, we released our first AI-assisted translation: an English translation of the Kli Yakar Torah commentary, which was originally translated by Claude 3.7 and then underwent a comprehensive, six-month editing process led by Sefaria Translation and Research Specialist Francis Nataf. Sefaria’s relationship with artificial intelligence (AI) began long before today’s chatbots. From the start, our founders made a core bet: build a free, open, machine-readable Jewish library so that Jewish texts can be searched, linked, reused, and studied at digital scale. As the Library grew, we used AI to strengthen one of Sefaria’s most important experiences: helping learners see how Jewish texts connect to one another. Large-language model (LLM) technology allowed us to continually increase interlinking between related texts, and for external websites to automatically create clickable citations when referencing Jewish sources in the Sefaria Library. In 2020, we launched Topics, a major LLM-enabled update that made it easier for users to discover sources by theme. In 2023, we began testing AI-assisted translation, with expert human review, so that more of the Library can be available in English. That same year, we started exploring what an AI-powered Sefaria-style learning assistant could look like After a multi-year testing phase, we built the Sefaria Library Assistant in 2025, and launched it in Spring 2026.
