This course examines ways in which Jewish hermeneutical texts shape the characters of Exemplary Figures (EFs) in the Talmud and Midrashim. A primary premise of the course is that Midrashic literature serves a key purpose, as foundational texts having a unique ability to weave together various character traits, thus promoting ideal figures in Jewish culture. Course participants will (a) familiarize themselves with key Midrashic passages that depict ideal Jewish figures; (b) apply the tools of cultural studies research to the critical analysis of Midrashic texts; and (c) learn how generations of commentators have employed the tales of exemplary figures to shape Jewish ideologies throughout history.
