(18) Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land to which I am taking you (19) and you eat of the bread of the land, you shall set some aside as a gift to the LORD: (20) as the first of your baking, you shall set aside as a gift; like the gift from the threshing floor. (21) You shall gift to the LORD from the first of your baking, through the generations.
This instance of “entering” the land is differs from all other Torah statements about “entering.” In those other cases it is said, “When you come”, or “when ye come”, and since we learn the laws of one from the other, the statement in one instance (Deut 26:1) that the law applies after full possession and settlement applies to all. In this case, however, it is stated “on your coming”, immediately upon entering the land and eating its bread they became obligated in “Challah” (Sifrei Bamidbar 110:1).
(3) These are obligated in Challah, but are exempt from Ma'aserot: Leket [fallen stalks for the poor], Shikhecha [forgotten sheaves for the poor], the Pe'ah [the unharvested field corner for the poor], Hefker [ownerless property], Ma'aser Rishon whose Terumah was taken, Ma'aser Sheni, redeemed Hekdesh, the surplus of the Omer offering, and crops that have not yet matured a third. Rabbi Eliezer says: crops less than a third are exempt from Challah.
And I said to them: On the contrary, even the one who says teruma today is a Torah law, agrees that challa is only by rabbinic law, as it says: “When you come into the land” (Numbers 15:18). I might think "when you come," means the entry of two or three spies into the land, but the verse states: “When you (plural) come,” that is, I said with the coming of all of you and not with the coming of some of you. And, when Ezra took them up [early Second Temple period] not all of them ascended.
The obligation to separate Challah outside of Israel, is a Rabbinic Law enacted to ensure that the laws of Challah are not forgotten by the Jewish people.

Taryag (613) in numerical value is equivalent to the phrase "this is the command of challah". This is in order to teach us that anyone who observes this mitzvah properly is considered like he observed all 613 mitzvot in the torah.

Adam was the pure "Challah" of the world as it says "God created Adam from the dust of the Earth". As Rabbi Yossi says: When a woman mixes the flour with water she must take Challah to atone for the transgression of Chavah who caused the fall of Adam. That's why she was given the mitzva of challah.
Rabbi Yossi encountered Elijah and said: It is written "I will make him a helpmate." How does a woman help a man? Elijah answered: When a man brings wheat or flax from the field, does he chew the wheat? does he wear the unprocessed flax? His wife renders them into bread and clothing--she lights up his eyes and stands him on his feet?

Rabbi Yoḥanan replied: A bandit knows about his banditry. Reish Lakish quipped: What benefit did you provide me by bringing me close to Torah? I was a leader then and I'm a leader now. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: the benefit is I brought you close to God, under the wings of the Divine Presence.

(10) O Power, full of mercy, who dwells on high, establish proper rest upon the wings of the Divine Presence, on the levels of the holy and pure ones [who] shine like the splendor of the firmament, [for] the soul of (the name of the departed, son of the name of his father) who went to his world, because I will - without making a vow - give charity for the memory of his soul; let his rest be in the Garden of Eden. Hence, Master of mercy, cover him in the cover of His wings forever and bind his soul with the Binding of life (God). God is his inheritance and let him rest upon his place of repose in peace. And let us say Amen.
