(טז) וְשָׁמְר֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת לַעֲשׂ֧וֹת אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֛ת לְדֹרֹתָ֖ם בְּרִ֥ית עוֹלָֽם׃ (יז) בֵּינִ֗י וּבֵין֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל א֥וֹת הִ֖וא לְעֹלָ֑ם כִּי־שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים עָשָׂ֤ה ה֙' אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּבַיּוֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י שָׁבַ֖ת וַיִּנָּפַֽשׁ׃ (ס)
(ח) זָכ֛וֹר֩ אֶת־י֥֨וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖֜ת לְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ (ט) שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִ֣ים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ כָּל־מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒ (י) וְי֙וֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜י שַׁבָּ֖ת ׀ לַיי אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ לֹֽ֣א־תַעֲשֶׂ֣֨ה כָל־מְלָאכָ֡֜ה אַתָּ֣ה ׀ וּבִנְךָֽ֣־וּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָ עַבְדְּךָ֤֨ וַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙ וּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָ וְגֵרְךָ֖֙ אֲשֶׁ֥֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶֽ֔יךָ (יא) כִּ֣י שֵֽׁשֶׁת־יָמִים֩ עָשָׂ֨ה יי אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶת־הַיָּם֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖נַח בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י עַל־כֵּ֗ן בֵּרַ֧ךְ יי אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת וַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ (ס)
(8) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. (9) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; (10) but the seventh day is a sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; (11) for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
(ה) המכבה את הנר מפני שהוא מתירא מפני גוים, מפני לסטים, מפני רוח רעה, ואם בשביל החולה שיישן, פטור. כחס על הנר, כחס על השמן, כחס על הפתילה, חיב. ורבי יוסי פוטר: בכלן חוץ מן הפתילה, מפני שהוא עושה פחם.
(5) [If] one extinguishes the lamp because he is afraid of non-Jews, of bandits, of an evil spirit, or that the sick may sleep, he is exempt; but [if his intention is] to preserve the lamp, to preserve the oil, or to preserve the wick, he is liable. Rabbi Yose exempts in all [these cases] except the [act preserving the wick], because he thereby creates a coal.
(א) הבונה כמה יבנה ויהא חיב, הבונה כל שהוא והמסתת, והמכה בפטיש ובמעצד, הקודח כל שהוא - חיב. זה הכלל: כל העושה מלאכה ומלאכתו מתקימת בשבת, חיב. רבן שמעון בן גמליאל אומר: אף המכה בקרנס על הסדן בשעת מלאכה - חיב, מפני שהוא כמתקן מלאכה.
(1) If one builds, how much must he build to be liable (i.e. to desecrate Shabbat)? If one builds the smallest quantity, or if one chops stone, or strikes with a hammer, or uses a chisel, or bores a hole - if any of these are done in the smallest quantity, he is liable. This is the principle: If one performs a Melakhah [a constructive activity forbidden on Shabbat and festivals] and that Melakhah endures on the Shabbat, he is liable. Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel says: One is likewise liable if he strikes a hammer on an anvil because it is like he improves the tool.
Luke 14.1-6
Now when Yeshua went into the home of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to eat a meal on Shabbat, they were watching him closely. And there before him was a man swollen with fluid. So Yeshua said to the Torah lawyers and the Pharisees, "Is it permitted to heal on Shabbat, or not?" But they kept silent. So Yeshua took hold of him and healed him, and he sent him away. Then he said to them, "Which of you, with a son or an ox falling into a well on Shabbat, will not immediately pull him out?" And they could not reply to these things.
