§ Rav Yehuda says that Rav says: When Moses ascended on High, he found the Holy One, Blessed be He, sitting and tying crowns on the letters of the Torah. Moses said before God: Master of the Universe, who stays your hand from giving the Torah without these additions? God said to him: There is a man who is destined to be born after several generations, and Akiva ben Yosef is his name; he is destined to derive from each and every thorn of these crowns mounds upon mounds of halakhot. It is for his sake that the crowns must be added to the letters of the Torah.
- Why do you think that G-d, who transcends physicality, is concerned with a physical feature of the Torah? Why did G-d believe the Torah would be incomplete without crowned letters?
- How does G-d's addition of crowns to the letters specifically for Rabbi Akiva help us understand our relationship to G-d and Torah?
- Why do you think Moshe sat in the 8th row of Rabbi Akiva's classroom?
- What do you make of the idea that while Moshe is distressed over the unfamiliarity of Rabbi Akiva's Beit Midrash, G-d is seemingly undisturbed?
- How might you speak in such a way that the integrity of your messages are retained by those who pass on your words?
- Moshe seems to be dealing with "imposter syndrome." How do you relate to his experience?
- How do you feel about Moshe's agreement to be silent when Rabbi Akiva suffers an unjust death? What is the place for silence when tragedy strikes?
- Why do you think G-d's response is identical to both of Moshe's challenges?
