(5) There is no difference between Shabbat and Yom Kippur except that the willful violation of [Shabbat] is [punishable] by man, and the willful violation of [Yom Kippur] is [punishable] by karet [Divinely imposed punishment consisting in severance from Heaven and/or the Jewish people].
To greet the Sabbath, come and we'll go, For she is a font of blessing
From the first, from of old, she was chosen, Made at the end, but first in plan
(2) WHICH GOD IN CREATING HAD MADE — The work which should have been done on the Sabbath He did in the double work which He executed on the sixth day
(2) We must pay close attention to the apparently superfluous words אשר עשה, "which He had done." We must also explore the meaning of the words ביום השביעי, "on the seventh day," which suggest that G'd did perform work on the seventh day but that "He completed it on that day." This was not so, but He had completed all His work already on the sixth day... Our verse then describes G'd as putting the finishing touch to His creation by bringing on the Sabbath, not by creating on the Sabbath. The reason the Torah repeats once more מכל מלאכתו אשר עשה, from all His work which He had done, is to emphasize that this work had been done previously, i.e. before the onset of the Sabbath. The word ויכל therefore refers to activity carried out previously. All that had been lacking was something that would give permanence to this universe of ours. The seventh day, i.e. the Sabbath, completed the cycle that provides this permanence. We are therefore entitled to view the Sabbath as one of the seven days of creation...

(1)And the intention of all the commandments is that we believe in our God and acknowledge to Him that He is our Creator. And that is the intention of creation, as we have no other explanation for the first creation, and the only reason that the highest God desires the lower beings is so that man should know and acknowledge to his God that He created him. And the intention of raising of the voice in prayer and the intention of synagogues and the merit of communal prayer is that there be a place for people to gather and concede to God that He created them and makes them exist, and to publicize this and to say in front of Him, "We are Your creatures."
(2) Behold, what our sages, of blessed memory, have taught us is that man was created solely to delight in G-d and to derive pleasure in the radiance of the Shechina (divine presence). For this is the true delight and the greatest pleasure that can possibly exist. The place of this pleasure is, in truth, in Olam Haba (the World to Come). For it was created expressly for this purpose.
(16) The Israelite people shall keep the sabbath, observing the sabbath throughout the ages as a covenant for all time: (17) it shall be a sign for all time between Me and the people of Israel. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and was refreshed.
On the Sabbath, a person can receive Divine inspiration to help him appreciate that everything is truly from God, and that it is only Him who gives us the capability to be successful. This recognition will bring a person a tremendous happiness. Additionally, the recognition that all of one's accomplishments are solely from God is, in and of itself, something which causes one to merit more success.
