Moishe Moment Bo: Paving Our Own Path

The angels went to God and asked, "When is the next Jewish Holiday?" And God responded, "You're asking me?! Let's you and I go and ask the people. They decide these calendar things." (Loose summary of Midrash Yalkut Shimoni).

The first commandment given to the Jewish people is to establish a calendar for themselves. Part of being a unified people is having a shared calendar. "This month shall mark for you the beginning of the months (Rosh Chodesh group anyone?!); it shall be the first of the months of the year for you" (Exodus 12:2). The idea of a calendar was God's, but how it would structure was up to Israel.

How often do we feel like the trajectory of our lives are set for us? Biologically, professionally, socially? There is some truth to this, for even if life is full of zigs and zags, that there is a general path. The exact path we take, however, and how we spend our time finding meaning (and fun) is really up to us.

So too with Moishe House. Moishe House might have certain event quotas, but that's just a framework for the magic we all make. Each house has a distinct culture with a distinct audience, and with that, the sacred opportunity to create events that build a certain type of intentional community. What transforms the Jewish people into a nation - our unique, self-driven calendar - is the same thing that makes a Moishe House a Home.
