Cities of Refuge
In the books of Numbers and Deuteronomy, the Torah discusses the establishment of six cities of refuge in the land of Israel to which people who killed accidentally would flee, thereby avoiding being killed by family members of the victim. These cities were part of a network of cities for the tribe of Levi. Cities of refuge and the laws surrounding them are the subject of the second chapter of tractate Makkot in the Mishnah and Talmud.
