וְגֵ֖ר לֹ֣א תִלְחָ֑ץ וְאַתֶּ֗ם יְדַעְתֶּם֙ אֶת־נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַגֵּ֔ר כִּֽי־גֵרִ֥ים הֱיִיתֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ י וְשֵׁ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים תִּזְרַ֣ע אֶת־אַרְצֶ֑ךָ וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ אֶת־תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ יא וְהַשְּׁבִיעִ֞ת תִּשְׁמְטֶ֣נָּה וּנְטַשְׁתָּ֗הּ וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ אֶבְיֹנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֔ךָ וְיִתְרָ֕ם תֹּאכַ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה כֵּֽן־תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה לְכַרְמְךָ֖ לְזֵיתֶֽךָ׃ יב שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ וּבַיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י תִּשְׁבֹּ֑ת לְמַ֣עַן יָנ֗וּחַ שֽׁוֹרְךָ֙ וַחֲמֹרֶ֔ךָ וְיִנָּפֵ֥שׁ בֶּן־אֲמָתְךָ֖ וְהַגֵּֽר׃ יג וּבְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם תִּשָּׁמֵ֑רוּ וְשֵׁ֨ם אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֲחֵרִים֙ לֹ֣א תַזְכִּ֔ירוּ לֹ֥א יִשָּׁמַ֖ע עַל־פִּֽיךָ׃ יד שָׁלֹ֣שׁ רְגָלִ֔ים תָּחֹ֥ג לִ֖י בַּשָּׁנָֽה׃

Exodus 23:9-14

You shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the feelings of the stranger, having yourselves been strangers in the land of Egypt. Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield; but in the seventh you shall let it rest and lie fallow. Let the needy among your people eat of it, and what they leave let the wild beasts eat. You shall do the same with your vineyards and your olive groves. Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor, in order that your ox and your ass may rest, and that your bondman and the stranger may be refreshed. Be on guard concerning all that I have told you. Make no mention of the names of other gods; they shall not be heard on your lips. Three times a year you shall hold a festival for Me:

חזקוני, שמות כ״ג:י׳:א׳

(א) שש שנים סמכו כאן בשביל ואכלו אביוני עמך.

Chizkuni, Exodus 23:10:1

(1) ושש שנים, “and for six consecutive years, etc.” the reason why this legislation is repeated here is because the Torah allocates the produce of the seventh year to the poor, the underprivileged (verse 11).

(א) ששת ימים תעשה מעשיך. נאמר כאן שבת בראשית לענין שביעית, שלא תסתרס ענין שבת בראשית ממקומה.

Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael, Tractate Kaspa 3:30

(1) (Exodus 23:12) "Six days shall you do your work": The Sabbath of creation is juxtaposed with shevi'ith (to teach that on shevi'ith — a year of Sabbath) the (observance of the) Sabbath of creation is not superseded.

מכילתא דרבי ישמעאל, מַסֶּכְתָּא דְכַסְפָּא ג׳:כ׳

(א) ושש שנים תזרע את ארצך. ר”א אומר, כשישראל עושין רצונו של מקום, הם עושין שמטה אחת בשבוע אחד שנאמר שש שנים תזרע שדך. וכשישראל אין עושין רצונו של מקום, הן עושין ד' שמטין בשבוע אחד. הא כיצד, נרה שנה וזורעה שנה, נרה [שנה] וזורעה שנה, נמצאו שהן עושין ארבעה שמטין בשבוע אחד.

Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael, Tractate Kaspa 3:20

(1) (Exodus 23:10) "Six years shall you sow your land": R. Eliezer says: When Israel does the L rd's will, they observe one shemitah (fallow year) in a seven-year period, as it is written "And six years shall you sow your land." And when they do not do His will, they observe four shemitoth in one seven-year period. How so? (The land is left) fallow one year and sown the next year, etc., so that they are found to observe four shemitoth in one seven-year period.
