I Carried You on Eagle's Wings - A Shavuot Yoga Experience

(א) בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁלִישִׁי לְצֵאת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה בָּאוּ מִדְבַּר סִינָי. (ב) וַיִּסְעוּ מֵרְפִידִים וַיָּבֹאוּ מִדְבַּר סִינַי וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר וַיִּחַן שָׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל נֶגֶד הָהָר. (ג) וּמֹשֶׁה עָלָה אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים וַיִּקְרָא אֵלָיו יְהוָה מִן הָהָר לֵאמֹר כֹּה תֹאמַר לְבֵית יַעֲקֹב וְתַגֵּיד לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. (ד) אַתֶּם רְאִיתֶם אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לְמִצְרָיִם וָאֶשָּׂא אֶתְכֶם עַל כַּנְפֵי נְשָׁרִים וָאָבִא אֶתְכֶם אֵלָי. (ה) וְעַתָּה אִם שָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּ בְּקֹלִי וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת בְּרִיתִי וִהְיִיתֶם לִי סְגֻלָּה מִכָּל הָעַמִּים כִּי לִי כָּל הָאָרֶץ. (ו) וְאַתֶּם תִּהְיוּ לִי מַמְלֶכֶת כֹּהֲנִים וְגוֹי קָדוֹשׁ אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר תְּדַבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.

On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2 After they set out from Refidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. 3 Then Moses went up to God, and God called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob, and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession, for the whole earth is mine, 6 And you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

ואשא אתכם על כנפי נשרים. ר' אליעזר אומר, זה יום רעמסס, לפי שנתקבצו כולם ובאו רעמסס לשעה קלה. - ואביא אתכם אלי לפני הר סיני ר' עקיבא אומר, זה יום מתן תורה; לפי שהיו ישראל נרתעין לאחוריהם שנים עשר מיל וחוזרין לפניהם שנים עשר מיל, הרי עשרים וארבעה מילין על כל דיבור ודיבור. ואביא אתכם אלי, לבית הבחירה.

"And I bore you on eagles' wings".

Rabbi Eliezer says: This refers to the day of the Exodus, when all of them were gathered together and came to Ramses in an instant. "And I brought you to Me": before Mount Sinai.

Rabbi Akiva says: It refers to the day of the giving of the Torah, when Israel retreated 12 mil and returned 12 mil — so that they "traveled" 24 mil for each pronouncement. "And I will bring you to Me" - to the Temple.

כְּנֶ֙שֶׁר֙ יָעִ֣יר קִנּ֔וֹ עַל־גּוֹזָלָ֖יו יְרַחֵ֑ף יִפְרֹ֤שׂ כְּנָפָיו֙ יִקָּחֵ֔הוּ יִשָּׂאֵ֖הוּ עַל־אֶבְרָתֽוֹ׃

With Rashi: God led them with mercy and compassion, as an eagle [by soft motions] awakes its nest, hovering over its fledglings and not bearing down upon them. Likewise, the Holy One of Blessing, in giving Israel the Torah, did not "bear down upon them" from one side, but "projected" from four sides, spreading its wings and taking them, bearing them on its outer wing from place to place, unlike other birds, who take their young in their talons, fearing the eagle who flies above them. Not so the eagle, which fears no other birds, but only projectiles, from which it shields its fledglings with its body. The Holy One, likewise, "shielded" Israel at the Red Sea [when the Egyptians were casting arrows and stones and the Cloud of Glory protected them].

כנשר יעיר קנו. נִהֲגָם בְּרַחֲמִים וּבְחֶמְלָה, כַּנֶּשֶׁר הַזֶּה רַחֲמָנִי עַל בָּנָיו, וְאֵינוֹ נִכְנָס לְקִנּוֹ פִּתְאוֹם עַד שֶׁהוּא מְקַשְׁקֵשׁ וּמְטָרֵף עַל בָּנָיו בִּכְנָפָיו בֵּין אִילָן לְאִילָן, בֵּין שׁוֹכָה לַחֲבֶרְתָּהּ, כְּדֵי שֶׁיֵּעוֹרוּ בָּנָיו וִיהֵא בָהֶם כֹּחַ לְקַבְּלוֹ (ספרי):

על גוזליו ירחף. אֵינוֹ מַכְבִּיד עַצְמוֹ עֲלֵיהֶם אֶלָּא מְחוֹפֵף — נוֹגֵעַ וְאֵינוֹ נוֹגֵעַ (תלמוד ירושלמי חגיגה ב') — אַף הַקָּבָּ"הּ, "שַׁדַּי לֹא מְצָאנֻהוּ שַׂגִּיא כֹחַ" (איוב ל"ז) כְּשֶׁבָּא לִתֵּן תּוֹרָה לֹא נִגְלָה עֲלֵיהֶם מֵרוּחַ אַחַת אֶלָּא מֵאַרְבַּע רוּחוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר "ה' מִסִּינַי בָּא וְזָרַח מִשֵּׂעִיר לָמוֹ הוֹפִיעַ מֵהַר פָּארָן" (דברים ל"ג), "אֱלוֹהַּ מִתֵּימָן יָבוֹא" (חבקוק ג') — זוּ רוּחַ רְבִיעִית (ספרי):

כנשר יעיר קנו AS AN EAGLE STIRS UP ITS NEST — God guided the Israelites with mercy and pity, like the eagle which is full of pity towards his young and does not enter its nest suddenly. First, it beats and flaps with its wings above its young passing between tree and tree, between branch and branch, in order that its young may awake and have enough strength to receive it.

על גוזליו ירחף IT HOVERS OVER ITS YOUNG — it does not press heavily upon them, but hovers above them - touching them and yet not touching them. So too, with the Holy One, (Job. 37:23) “The Almighty, we did not find Him to be too powerful in strength”: when He came to give the Torah to Israel, God did not reveal Himself from one side, (thus concentrating His power at one point), but from four sides, as it is said, (Deut. 33:2) “The Holy One came from Sinai, and shone forth from Seir unto them; God appeared from Mount Paran"; also (Habakkuk 3:3) “God came from Teman” — this is the fourth side (Sifrei Devarim 314:1).
