It is taught in the Zohar that a long time ago, on Shavuot, the most religious people would stay awake all night and study Torah. The majority of Torah students have adopted this practice. A reason for this is it says in the Torah that the children of Israel slept all night [the night before the Torah was given] and that God had to wake them up [to receive the Torah.]... so we stay up all night to make amends.

Said Rabbi Abbahu in the name of Rabbi Yochanan: When the Holy One gave the Torah, no animal made a sound, no bird flew, no ox lo'ed, none of the angels flapped a wing or sang the song "Kadosh Kadosh Kadosh (Holy, Holy, Holy!)" The sea did not roar, and none of the creatures made a sound. The world was completely silent and then God said : I am the Lord your God/Anochi Adonai Elohecha

The Torah says, “And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lowermost part of the mount” (Exodus 19:17). Rabbi Avdimi bar Ḥama bar Ḥasa said: the Jewish people actually stood beneath the mountain, and the verse teaches that the Holy One, Blessed be He, overturned the mountain above the Jews like a tub, and said to them: If you accept the Torah, excellent, and if not, there will be your burial.
