Yehoshua ben Perachiah and Nittai of Arbel received the transmission from them. Yehoshua ben Perachia said, Make for yourself a rabbi, acquire for yourself a friend; and judge every person in their favor.
(ד) יוֹסֵי בֶן יוֹעֶזֶר אִישׁ צְרֵדָה וְיוֹסֵי בֶן יוֹחָנָן אִישׁ יְרוּשָׁלַיִם קִבְּלוּ מֵהֶם. יוֹסֵי בֶן יוֹעֶזֶר אִישׁ צְרֵדָה אוֹמֵר, יְהִי בֵיתְךָ בֵית וַעַד לַחֲכָמִים, וֶהֱוֵי מִתְאַבֵּק בַּעֲפַר רַגְלֵיהֶם, וֶהֱוֵי שׁוֹתֶה בְצָמָא אֶת דִּבְרֵיהֶם:
(4) Yose ben Yoezer, man of Tsreida, and Yose ben Yochanan, man of Jerusalem, received from him. Yose ben Yoezer says, "May your house be a meeting house for Sages, become dirty in the dust of their feet and drink their words thirstily."
דבר אחר: יהי ביתך בית ועד לחכמים כיצד? בזמן שתלמיד חכם נכנס אצלך לומר לך "שנה לי", אם יש בידך לשנות, שנה לו. ואם לאו, פטרהו מיד. ואל ישב לפניך לא על המטה, ולא הכסא, ולא על הספסל - אלא ישב לפניך על הארץ; וכל דבר ודבר שיצא מפיך יקבלהו עליו באימה, ביראה, ברתת ובזיע, [כדרך שקבלו אבותינו מהר סיני באימה ויראה ורתת וזיע]:

Another interpretation: let your house be a gathering place for the wise. How so? When a wise scholar comes to you and says: “teach me”, if you have something in hand to teach, teach him. If not, let him go immediately. And he should not sit before you on the bed, on the chair, or on the bench, but rather on the earth; and every single word that leaves your mouth he shall receive upon himself in awe and in fear and in trembling and in agitation, just as our ancestors received from Mount Sinai in awe and in fear and in trembling and in agitation...
והוי מתאבק בעפר רגליהם כיצד? בזמן שתלמיד חכם נכנס לעירת אל תאמר "איני צריך לו"; אלא, לך אצלו. ואל תשב עמו לא על גב המטה, ולא על הכסא, ולא על הספסל - אלא שב לפניו על הארץ. וכל דבר שיצא מפיו קבלהו עליך באימה, ביראה ,ברתת, ובזיעה כדרך שקבלו אבותיך מהר סיני באימה, ביראה, ברתת, ובזיע:

be one who makes himself dirty at the dust of their feet. How so? When a wise scholar comes to the city, do not say “I have no need of him”; rather, go to him. And do not sit with him on the bed or on the chair or on the bench - rather, sit before him on the earth and every word that leaves his mouth you should receive upon yourself in awe and in fear and in trembling and in agitation just as our ancestors received from Sinai in awe and in fear and in trembling and in agitation
(ו) גדולה תורה יותר מן הכהונה ומן המלכות, שהמלכות נקנית בשלשים מעלות, והכהנה בעשרים וארבע, והתורה נקנית בארבעים ושמונה דברים.ואלו הן, בתלמוד, בשמיעת האזן, בעריכת שפתים
. . . ומתישב לבו בתלמודו, שואל ומשיב שומע ומוסיף, הלומד על מנת ללמד והלומד על מנת לעשות, המחכים את רבו, והמכון את שמועתו, והאומר דבר בשם אומרו, הא למדת כל האומר דבר בשם אומרו מביא גאלה לעולם, שנאמר (אסתר ב), ותאמר אסתר למלך בשם מרדכי.
(6) Greater is Torah than priesthood and kingship, for monarchy is obtained with thirty levels, and priesthood with twenty-four, and Torah is obtained with forty-eight things. And they are these:
- Learning,
- Listening of the ear,
- Preparation of speech
- . . . Deliberation in study,
- Questioning and responding,
- Hearing and adding,
- Learning in order to teach
- Learning in order to act,
- Making his master wiser,
- Focusing one's words,
- Citing the source, for it is taught that one who cites a source brings redemption to the world, as it says (Esther 2:22): "Esther told the king in Mordekhai’s name."

Rabbi Tarfon and the Elders were once reclining in the upper story of Nithza's house, in Lydda, when this question was raised before them: Is study greater, or practice? Rabbi Tarfon answered, saying: "Practice is greater." Rabbi Akiva answered saying: "Study is great, for it leads to practice." Then they all answered and said: "Study is greater, for it leads to action."
