Idols in the Modern Age

"What should religion do in a secular age? It should be countervoice, challenging the conventional wisdom and confronting idolatry.

Every age has its idols. What are ours?"

Genesis 1:27
(27) And God created man in His image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

What comes to mind - both literally and figuratively -

when one hears the words "God's Image?"

Exodus 20:4 (From the Ten Commandments)
(4) Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
Exodus 32:1-8
When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, the people gathered against Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god who shall go before us, for that man Moses, who brought us from the land of Egypt—we do not know what has happened to him.” Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” And all the people took off the gold rings that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron.
This he took from them and cast in a mold, and made it into a molten calf. And they exclaimed, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”
....The LORD spoke to Moses, “...for your people... have been quick to turn aside from the way that I enjoined upon them. They have made themselves a molten calf and bowed low to it and sacrificed to it, saying: ‘This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’”
Bereishit Rabbah 38:13
Terah was a worshipper of idols. One time he had to travel to a place, and he left Abraham in charge of his store. When a man would come in to buy [idols], Abraham would ask: How old are you? They would reply: fifty or sixty. Abraham would then respond: Woe to him who is sixty years old and worships something made today - the customer would be embarrassed, and would leave. A woman entered carrying a dish full of flour. She said to him: this is for you, offer it before them. Abraham took a club in his hands and broke all of the idols, and placed the club in the hands of the biggest idol. When his father returned, he asked: who did all of this? Abraham replied: I can't hide it from you - a woman came carrying a dish of flour and told me to offer it before them. I did, and one of them said 'I will eat it first,' and another said 'I will eat it first.' The biggest one rose, took a club, and smashed the rest of them. Terah said: what, do you think you can trick me? They don't have cognition! Abraham said: Do your ears hear what your mouth is saying?
Psalm 115:1-8
Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to Your name bring glory for the sake of Your love and Your faithfulness.
Let the nations not say, “Where, now, is their God?”
When our God is in heaven and all that He wills He accomplishes.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see;
they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell;
they have hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk;
they can make no sound in their throats.
Those who fashion them, all who trust in them, shall become like them.

What are our Modern Idols? What purpose do they serve?

To distract, to comfort, to [spiritually] redirect, to absorb our attention...?
