Exploring the Amidah

Introduction to the Amidah

Our Sages modeled a lot of the mechanics and choreography of the Amidah from the prayer of Hannah

Rav Hamnuna said: How many significant halakhot can be derived from these verses of the prayer of Hannah? As it says: “And Hannah spoke in her heart, only her lips moved and her voice could not be heard, so Eli thought her to be drunk” (I Samuel 1:13). The Gemara elaborates: From that which is stated here: “And Hannah spoke in her heart,” from here we learn that one who prays must focus his or her heart heart on prayer. And from that which is stated here: “Only her lips moved,” from here we learn that the one who prays must enunciate the words with his lips. From the verse: “And her voice could not be heard,” we learn that one is forbidden to raise one's voice in one's Amida prayer as it must be recited silently.

Opening

We begin the Amidah with this phrase from Psalm 51:1

אֲדנָי שפָתַי תִּפְתָּח וּפִי יַגִּיד תְּהִלָּתֶךָ:

My Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Your praise.

A-do-nai s'fa-tai tif-tach, u-fi ya-gid t'hi-la-te-cha.

Initial Blessings of Praise

The first three blessings of every Amidah are about establishing a direct pathway to God through a connection with our historical narrative and with images of God's power

Closing Blessings of Thanksgiving

Every Amidah concludes with the following 3 blessings offering thanks to God.

PRAYING FOR THE FUTURE

Look with favor, Lord our God, on Your people Israel and pay heed to their prayer; restore the service to Your Sanctuary and accept with love and favor Israel's fire-offerings and prayer; and may the service of Your people Israel always find favor.

May our eyes behold Your return to Zion in mercy. Blessed are You Lord, who restores His Divine Presence to Zion.

We thankfully acknowledge that You are the Lord our God and God of our fathers forever. You are the strength of our life, the shield of our salvation in every generation. We will give thanks to You and recount Your praise, evening, morning and noon, for our lives which are committed into Your hand, for our souls which are entrusted to You, for Your miracles which are with us daily, and for Your continual wonders and beneficences. You are the Beneficent One, for Your mercies never cease; the Merciful One, for Your kindnesses never end; for we always place our hope in You.

And for all these, may Your Name, our King, be continually blessed, exalted and extolled forever and all time.

Bestow peace, goodness and blessing, life, graciousness, kindness and mercy, upon us and upon all Your people Israel. Bless us, our Father, all of us as one, with the light of Your countenance.
