(13) If, then, you obey the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day, loving your God יהוה and serving [God] with all your heart and soul, (14) I*I That is, יהוה; Samaritan reads “He.” will grant the rain for your land in season, the early rain and the late. You shall gather in your new grain and wine and oil— (15) I*I See note at v. 14. will also provide grass in the fields for your cattle—and thus you shall eat your fill. (16) Take care not to be lured away to serve other gods and bow to them. (17) For יהוה’s anger will flare up against you, shutting up the skies so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce; and you will soon perish from the good land that יהוה is assigning to you. (18) Therefore impress these My words upon your very heart:*very heart Lit. “heart and self.” bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead,*symbol on your forehead See notes on 6.8. (19) and teach them to your children—reciting them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up; (20) and inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates— (21) to the end that you and your children may endure, in the land that יהוה swore to your fathers to assign to them, as long as there is a heaven over the earth.

(3) If you follow My laws and faithfully observe My commandments, (4) I will grant your rains in their season, so that the earth shall yield its produce and the trees of the field their fruit. (5) Your threshing shall overtake the vintage, and your vintage shall overtake the sowing; you shall eat your fill of bread and dwell securely in your land. (6) I will grant peace in the land, and you shall lie down untroubled by anyone; I will give the land respite from vicious beasts, and no sword shall cross your land. (7) [Your army] shall give chase to your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. (8) Five of you shall give chase to a hundred, and a hundred of you shall give chase to ten thousand; your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. (9) I will look with favor upon you, and make you fertile and multiply you; and I will maintain My covenant with you. (10) You shall eat old grain long stored, and you shall have to clear out the old to make room for the new. (11) I will establish My abode in your midst, and I will not spurn you. (12) I will be ever present in your midst: I will be your God, and you shall be My people. (13) I יהוה am your God who brought you out from the land of the Egyptians to be their slaves no more, who broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. (14) But if you do not obey Me and do not observe all these commandments,

(1) Hallelujah.
It is good to chant hymns to our God;
it is pleasant to sing glorious praise.
(2) The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem;
He gathers in the exiles of Israel.
(3) He heals their broken hearts,
and binds up their wounds.
(4) He reckoned the number of the stars;
to each He gave its name.
(5) Great is our Lord and full of power;
His wisdom is beyond reckoning.
(6) The LORD gives courage to the lowly,
and brings the wicked down to the dust.
(7) Sing to the LORD a song of praise,
chant a hymn with a lyre to our God,
(8) who covers the heavens with clouds,
provides rain for the earth,
makes mountains put forth grass;
(9) who gives the beasts their food,
to the raven’s brood what they cry for.
(10) He does not prize the strength of horses,
nor value the fleetnessaLit. “thighs.” of men;
(11) but the LORD values those who fear Him,
those who depend on His faithful care.
(12) O Jerusalem, glorify the LORD;
praise your God, O Zion!
(13) For He made the bars of your gates strong,
and blessed your children within you.
(14) He endows your realm with well-being,
and satisfies you with choice wheat.
(15) He sends forth His word to the earth;
His command runs swiftly.
(16) He lays down snow like fleece,
scatters frost like ashes.
(17) He tosses down hail like crumbs—
who can endure His icy cold?
(18) He issues a command—it melts them;
He breathes—the waters flow.
(19) He issued His commands to Jacob,
His statutes and rules to Israel.
(20) He did not do so for any other nation;
of such rules they know nothing.
Hallelujah.

(1) Of Solomon.

O God, endow the king with Your judgments,
the king’s son with Your righteousness;
(2) that he may judge Your people rightly,
Your lowly ones, justly.
(3) Let the mountains produce well-being for the people,
the hills, the reward of justice.
(4) Let him champion the lowly among the people,
deliver the needy folk,
and crush those who wrong them.
(5) Let them fear You as long as the sun shines,
while the moon lasts, generations on end.
(6) Let him be like rain that falls on a mown field,
like a downpour of rain on the ground,
(7) that the righteous may flourish in his time,
and well-being abound, till the moon is no more.

(11) but the land you are about to cross into and possess, a land of hills and valleys, soaks up its water from the rains of heaven. (12) It is a land which your God יהוה looks after, on which your God יהוה always keeps an eye, from year’s beginning to year’s end.

(10) Lot looked about him and saw how well watered was the whole plain of the Jordan, all of it—this was before יהוה had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—all the way to Zoar, like the garden of יהוה, like the land of Egypt. (11) So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they parted from each other;

(2) כי לא המטיר BECAUSE GOD HAD NOT CAUSED IT TO RAIN — And what is the reason that God had not caused it to rain? כי אדם אין לעבוד את האדמה BECAUSE THERE WAS NO MAN TO TILL THE GROUND, and there was, therefore, no one to recognize the utility of rain. When Adam came (was created), however, and he realised that it was necessary for the world, he prayed for it and it fell, so that trees and verdure sprang forth.
