Arrogance, before failure. (19) Better to be humble and among the lowly
Than to share spoils with the proud.
The Rainbow is the sign of the universal Noahide covenant between Eloqim and all humankind. It is a sign of divine mercy and justice, not of human pride. If you have questions, you may AskNoah.org or consider this prototype Noahide order of prayer and blessing.
May the Almighty hear the prayer of the humble on this holy day of Atonement, and give a due reward for pride to those who prefer it. On Rosh haShana it was written, and on Yom Kippur, let it be sealed.
O LORD, my heart is not proud
nor my look haughty;
I do not aspire to great things
or to what is beyond me;
Thank you for considering the testimony of these bible verses. May this testimony atone and begin to make tiqqun for the false teaching that I and my preceptors spread, during my previous career as an evangelical christian, in which we proudly presumed to replace the Judaism and incited Jews to abandon the Sinai covenant, ignore the rainbow covenant, practice false worship and tolerate social injustice, and assimilate to popular culture. May this reading atone for the sins of wandering Jews who followed such bad advice.
May this admission atone in part for the social defects which I've caused, and begin to make tiqqun for the sins of the eruv rav in inciting Israel to the sin of the golden calf.
In the merit of receiving this mussar haskel and tochacha, may we all merit to have a year of humility with the grace and blessings upon obedience, that the Holy One has promised.
Let no arrogance cross your lips!
For the LORD is an all-knowing God;
By Him actions are measured.
(4) The bows of the mighty are broken,
And the faltering are girded with strength.
Seven are an abomination to Him: (17) A haughty bearing,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood, (18) A mind that hatches evil plots,
Feet quick to run to evil, (19) A false witness testifying lies,
And one who incites brothers to quarrel.
and with the perverse, You are wily. (28) It is You who deliver lowly folk,
but haughty eyes You humble.
(2) Probe me, O LORD, and try me, test my akidneys and heart. for your mercy is before my eyes, and I have walked in thy truth. (4) I have not consorted with those gift vanities, nor into esoteric conspiracies will I come. (5) I have hated the company of evil men, and with the wicked I will not return; (6) I wash my hands in innocence, and walk around Your altar, O LORD,
Whose glorious beauty is but wilted flowers
On the heads of men bloated with rich food,
Who are overcome by wine!
(2) Lo, my Lord has something strong and mighty,
Like a storm of hail,
A shower of pestilence.
Something like a storm of massive, torrential rain
Shall be hurled with force to the ground. (3) Trampled underfoot shall be
The proud crowns of the drunkards of Ephraim,
Turn back to their God;
Because of the lecherous impulse within them,
They pay no heed to the LORD. (5) Israel’s pride shall be humbled before his very eyes,
As Israel and Ephraim fall because of their sin
(And Judah falls with them). (6) Then they will go with their sheep and cattle
To seek the LORD, but they will not find Him.-c
He has cast them off:-b
The relationship between Shame and Humility
God is truly good to Israel,
to those whose heart is pure. (2) As for me, my feet had almost strayed,
my steps were nearly led off course, (3) for I envied the wanton;
I saw the wicked at ease. (4) Death has no pangs for them;
their body is healthy. (5) They have no part in the travail of men;
they are not afflicted like the rest of mankind. (6) So pride adorns their necks,
lawlessness enwraps them as a mantle. (7) Fat shuts out their eyes;
their fancies are extravagant.-a (8) They scoff and plan evil;
from their eminence they plan wrongdoing. (9) They set their mouths against heaven,
and their tongues range over the earth. (10) So they pound His people again and again,
until they are drained of their very last tear.-a (11) Then they say, “How could God know?
Is there knowledge with the Most High?” (12) Such are the wicked;
ever tranquil, they amass wealth.
My refuge in a day of trouble,
To You nations shall come
From the ends of the earth and say:
Our fathers inherited utter delusions,
Things that are futile and worthless.
What is implied? One who shuns pride and turns to the other extreme and carries himself lowly is called pious. This is the quality of piety. However, if he separates himself [from pride] only to the extent that he reaches the mean and displays humility, he is called wise. This is the quality of wisdom. The same applies with regard to other character traits.
The pious of the early generations would bend their temperaments from the intermediate path towards [either of] the two extremes. For some traits they would veer towards the final extreme, for others, towards the first extreme. This is referred to as [behavior] beyond the measure of the law.
We are commanded to walk in these intermediate paths - and they are good and straight paths - as [Deuteronomy 28:9] states: "And you shall walk in His ways."
