This sheet is a resource to help clarify what's going on in the first few chapters of Berachot, which spend a lot of time discussing the Shema. There are two key factors at play:
1. What the rabbis mean when referring to the Shema and the blessings surrounding it.
2. How the Shema is referred to and presented today.
What are the rabbis talking about when they're talking about shema?
Sometimes, they're only referring to the first line. Other times, they're referring to the full three paragraphs.
Originally, those three paragraphs are as follows:
(ד) שְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ יְהֹוָ֥ה ׀ אֶחָֽד׃ (ה) וְאָ֣הַבְתָּ֔ אֵ֖ת יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ בְּכׇל־לְבָבְךָ֥ וּבְכׇל־נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וּבְכׇל־מְאֹדֶֽךָ׃ (ו) וְהָי֞וּ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֧י מְצַוְּךָ֛ הַיּ֖וֹם עַל־לְבָבֶֽךָ׃ (ז) וְשִׁנַּנְתָּ֣ם לְבָנֶ֔יךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֖ בָּ֑ם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ֤ בְּבֵיתֶ֙ךָ֙ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ֣ בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וּֽבְשׇׁכְבְּךָ֖ וּבְקוּמֶֽךָ׃ (ח) וּקְשַׁרְתָּ֥ם לְא֖וֹת עַל־יָדֶ֑ךָ וְהָי֥וּ לְטֹטָפֹ֖ת בֵּ֥ין עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (ט) וּכְתַבְתָּ֛ם עַל־מְזֻז֥וֹת בֵּיתֶ֖ךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶֽיךָ׃ {ס}
(4) Hear, O Israel! יהוה is our God, יהוה alone. (5) You shall love your God יהוה with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (6) Take to heart these instructions with which I charge you this day. (7) Impress them upon your children. Recite them when you stay at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them serve as a symbol on your forehead; (9) inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Sometimes people use "Shema" as shorthand for the first sentence, and refer to the rest of this paragraph as "Vayahavta". This isn't wrong! But it is a modern construction of the paragraph.
In the context of the Rabbinic organization of the Shema as three paragraphs, that first line is part of the entire first paragraph.

This is the original second paragraph of the Shema. In many contemporary prayer books, there is an alternate second paragraph. These versions will be offered later in this sheet.
(לז) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (לח) דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם וְעָשׂ֨וּ לָהֶ֥ם צִיצִ֛ת עַל־כַּנְפֵ֥י בִגְדֵיהֶ֖ם לְדֹרֹתָ֑ם וְנָ֥תְנ֛וּ עַל־צִיצִ֥ת הַכָּנָ֖ף פְּתִ֥יל תְּכֵֽלֶת׃ (לט) וְהָיָ֣ה לָכֶם֮ לְצִיצִת֒ וּרְאִיתֶ֣ם אֹת֗וֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם֙ אֶת־כׇּל־מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהֹוָ֔ה וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם וְלֹֽא־תָת֜וּרוּ אַחֲרֵ֤י לְבַבְכֶם֙ וְאַחֲרֵ֣י עֵֽינֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־אַתֶּ֥ם זֹנִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ (מ) לְמַ֣עַן תִּזְכְּר֔וּ וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֶת־כׇּל־מִצְוֺתָ֑י וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם קְדֹשִׁ֖ים לֵאלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם׃ (מא) אֲנִ֞י יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצֵ֤אתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִהְי֥וֹת לָכֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִ֑ים אֲנִ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ {פ}
This is the final paragraph of the Shema.
Contemporary prayer books often have the header "The Shema and its/her Blessings".
As alluded to in Berachot 1:4, there are a certain number of blessings before and after the Shema depending on the time of day. We don't actually know for certain what exact blessings the rabbis themselves were reciting. Today, though, the following are almost always what you'll find in a siddur (prayer book):
- During morning services, two blessings are recited before the Shema and one after the Shema.
- The two blessings before are Yotzer Or and Ahava Rabbah. The blessing after is known as Emet Vayatziv.
- During evening services, there are two blessings before the Shema and two after.
- The two before are HaMaariv Aravim and Ahavat Olam. The two after are Emet V'Emunah and Hashkiveinu.
There is a huge variety of siddurim across not only Jewish sects, but also time and place.
- Koren, Artscroll, Lev Shalem, Eit Ratzon, and Sim Shalom are all siddurim that present the Shema as the three paragraph above.
- Mishkan T'filah and Kol Haneshama both offer both the original second paragraph as well as an alternative text selections from Tanakh.
- Mishkan T'filah offers texts from Proverbs/Mishlei 2 as well as Ecclesiastes/Kohelet 9 and 12.
- Kol Haneshama offers a selection from Deuteronomy 28:1-6 and 30:15-19. Their reasoning for adding an additional selection is that "the traditional wording of Biblical Selection II presents a detailed bountiful or devastating consequences of Israel's collective relationship to the mitzvot. That biblical section (Deuteronomy 11:13-21) offers a supernatural theology that many contemporary Jews find difficult."
This isn't a finite list of versions of the Shema!
