(2) May the LORD answer you in time of trouble,
the name of Jacob’s God keep you safe. (3) May He send you help from the sanctuary,
and sustain you from Zion. (4) May He receive the tokens of all your meal offerings,
and approve your burnt offerings. Selah. (5) May He grant you your desire,
and fulfill your every plan. (6) May we shout for joy in your victory,
arrayed by standards in the name of our God.
May the LORD fulfill your every wish.
(7) Now I know that the LORD will give victory to His anointed,
will answer him from His heavenly sanctuary
with the mighty victories of His right arm. (8) They [call] on chariots, they [call] on horses,
but we call on the name of the LORD our God. (9) They collapse and lie fallen,
but we rally and gather strength. (10) O LORD, grant victory!

For the leader. A psalm of David. May the LORD answer you in time of trouble, the name of Jacob’s God keep you safe.
א"ר יודן [משל] לאשה שהיא עם אמה בכעס עלתה אמה למעלה. ובשעת לידתה היתה מצוחת מלמטה ואמה שומעת קולה מלמעלה וצווחת גם היא כנגדה. והיו השכנות אומרות לה מה טיביך וכי את יולדת עמה. אמרה להן בתי יולדת בצער אף על פי שהכעיסה אותי איני יכולה לסבול צווחתה ואני צווחת עמה לפי שצרת בתי שלי היא.
Rabbi Yudan said: [This is like] a pregnant woman who was angry at her mother, and when she went into labor, her mother went upstairs while she remained crying downstairs. As her mother heard her crying downstairs, she cried upstairs. Her neighbors said to her, “What is the matter, that you are screaming? Are you giving birth with her?” She said to them, “My daughter is in pain. How can I stand her screaming? I am screaming because my daughter’s pain is my pain.”
דבר אחר יענך ה' ביום צרה. לאב ובן שהיו מהלכין בדרך ונתיגע הבן אמר לאביו והיכן היא המדינה. אמר לו בני סימן זה יהא בידך אם ראית בית הקברות לפניך דע כי המדינה קרובה לך. כך אמר הקב"ה לישראל אם ראיתם שהצרות מכסות אתכם באותה שעה אתם נגאלים שנאמר יענך ה' ביום צרה. ישגבך שם אלקי יעקב.
Another interpretation: "May the Lord answer you in time of trouble." [This is like] a father and a son who were walking along the road, and the son become tired. He said to his father: Where is the [nearest] settlement? [His father] said to him: My son, let this be a sign for you; if you see a house nearby you, know that the settlement is close to you. So the Holy One said to Israel: if you see that troubles are surrounding you, at that same hour you are about to be redeemed, as it is said, "may the Lord answer you in a time of trouble; may the name of Jacob's God keep you safe."
Another interpretation of "May the LORD answer you in time of trouble." What is a time of trouble? Reish Lakish said: to what is this matter similar? To a woman who sat in labor on a birthing chair, and she regretted giving birth, and they said: The One who answered your mother will answer you. So David said to Israel: The One who answered Jacob will answer you, just as Jacob prayed (Gen. 35:3): "[Come, let us go up to Bethel,] and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me when I was in trouble [and who has been with me wherever I have gone].” And so too "May the LORD answer you in time of trouble, the name of Jacob’s God [keep you safe]."
וְאָמַר רַבִּי אָבִין הַלֵּוִי: מַאי דִּכְתִיב ״יַעַנְךָ ה׳ בְּיוֹם צָרָה יְשַׂגֶּבְךָ שֵׁם אֱלֹקֵי יַעֲקֹב״, אֱלֹקֵי יַעֲקֹב וְלֹא אֱלֹקֵי אַבְרָהָם וְיִצְחָק? מִכָּאן לְבַעַל הַקּוֹרָה שֶׁיִּכָּנֵס בְּעׇבְיָהּ שֶׁל קוֹרָה.
And Rabbi Avin HaLevi said: What does it mean which is written: “May the LORD answer you in time of trouble, the name of Jacob’s God keep you safe.” (Psalms 20:2)? The God of Jacob and not the God of Abraham and Isaac? From here [we learn]: One who owns a beam should approach carrying the thick portion of the beam.
ישגבך שם אלקי יעקב. ובמקום אחר הוא אומר (בבלי ברכות סד א): מכאן לבעל הקורה שיכנס בעביה של קורה. כן יעקב הוא אבינו לבד; אבל אברהם היה לו בן אחר והוא ישמעאל, ויצחק היה לו עשו. גם יתכן לפרש כי פרוש אלקי יעקב על כל ישראל, כי נקראו יעקב וישראל, כמו אל תירא עבדי יעקב (ירמיהו ל י); וכן במקומות רבים.
"The name of Jacob's God keep you safe." In another place (Berakhot 64a) it is written, "from here [we learn]: One who owns a beam should approach carrying the thick portion of the beam." So Jacob was our ancestor only; but Abraham had another son, Ishmael, and Isaac had Esau. Therefore the commentators explain that "Jacob's God" refers to all Israel, since they were called both Jacob and Israel, as in "have no fear, My servant Jacob" (Jer. 30:10), and similarly in many places.
ד. כשיושבת על המשבר יאמר שנים עשר פעמים מזמור יענך ... ויכוין בכל פעם אות מהשמות ובנקוד הויות ולא ישנה המזמור ללשון נקבה אלא יאמרנו ככתוב שם.
When [the laboring woman] squats, at the turning point [of labor], [her husband] should say twelve times “A Psalm, May [the Lord] answer you” … and he should direct this [recitation] each time as a sign/omen/indication of live [birth], from the words and their vocalization. And he must not change the psalm into feminine grammar; rather, he should say it just as it is written there.
