A Shabbos Vort: A Collection of Thoughts, Stories and Parables on the Weekly Parsha by Yisrael Bronstein (page 126)
Why, asked R' Meir of Premishlan, does the verse use the expression "but they did not find any," implying that there was manna but they couldn't find it. After all, the manna did not fall on Shabbos at all, so the verse should have read "but there wasn't any."
The wording of the verse, answered the rebbe, can be explained with what is taught in the Yalkut Shimoni. When Moshe Rabbeinu informed the Jews that the manna would not fall on Shabbos so they should gather a double portion on erev Shabbos, Dasan and Aviram thought of a scheme that would make it appear to the people that Moshe does not speak the truth.
"Moshe Rabbeinu is mistaken!" they announced to the people. "When you wake up on Shabbos morning, you will see that the manna will have fallen just as it falls on every other day of the week."
What did they do? Early Shabbos morning, before anyone else had risen, Dasan and Aviram quietly left their tents and maliciously scattered some of their manna around the tents of the Jewish people. This way, they reasoned, when the Jews wake up in the morning and see the manna, they will think that it had descended on Shabbos and that Moshe had lied to them.
Hashem, however, saw to it that their wicked scheme would not succeed. He sent birds to the Jewish encampment to eat all the manna that had been placed around the tents.
When the Jews awoke and saw that manna had not descended that day, they immediately declared, "Moshe is truth!"
This is why, concluded the rebbe, the verse states, "but they did not find any"as the Jewish people did not find any of the manna that Dasan and Aviram said they would find.
What is the question R' Meir of Premishlan has about the wording of the statement "but they did not find any" regarding the Manna on Shabbos day?
What does R' Meir of Premishlan think it ought to have said instead?
How does the Midrash above answer the question of why the pasuk says "but they did not find any?"
What lesson can we learn from this story?

Why do you think they needed to make that switch at that time?
