  1. Marc Brettler, How to Read the Bible, p. 16: “There is no certain way of knowing that we have the convention right, other than the fact that it allows many texts to make sense, which is a partly subjective criterion.”

  2. Joel Hoffman, And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible's Original Meaning, p. 18: “…most people who care about the Bible already have a sense of what they want it to mean. Whether taking cues from the New Testament, later commentaries, religious leaders, childhood religious instruction, or personal spirituality, we all have baggage when it comes to the Bible. An honest inquiry demands that we leave that baggage behind.”

    (10) And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof; it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. (11) A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be unto you; ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of the undressed vines.

  4. jubilee: a special anniversary of an event, especially one celebrating twenty-five or fifty years of a reign or activity.

    (44) And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

19 For lo! That day is at hand, burning like an oven. All the arrogant and all the doers of evil shall be straw, and the day that is coming — said the LORD of Hosts — shall burn them to ashes and leave of them neither stock nor boughs. 20 But for you who revere My name a sun of victory shall rise to bring healing. You shall go forth and stamp like stall-fed calves, 21 and you shall trample the wicked to a pulp, for they shall be dust beneath your feet on the day that I am preparing — said the LORD of Hosts. 22 Be mindful of the Teaching of My servant Moses, whom I charged at Horeb with laws and rules for all Israel. 23 Lo, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the coming of the awesome, fearful day of the LORD. 24 He shall reconcile parents with children and children with their parents, so that, when I come, I do not strike the whole land with utter destruction.

  10. Malachi 4:2 (KJV)

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

    (22) Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying: (23) ’Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD, the God of heaven, given me; and He hath charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whosoever there is among you of all His people—the LORD his God be with him—let him go up.’
