(כט) כִּֽי־יַכְרִית֩ יקוק אֱלֹקֶ֜יךָ אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתָּ֥ה בָא־שָׁ֛מָּה לָרֶ֥שֶׁת אוֹתָ֖ם מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ וְיָרַשְׁתָּ֣ אֹתָ֔ם וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֖ בְּאַרְצָֽם׃ (ל) הִשָּׁ֣מֶר לְךָ֗ פֶּן־תִּנָּקֵשׁ֙ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם אַחֲרֵ֖י הִשָּׁמְדָ֣ם מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ וּפֶן־תִּדְרֹ֨שׁ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר אֵיכָ֨ה יַעַבְד֜וּ הַגּוֹיִ֤ם הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ אֶת־אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם וְאֶעֱשֶׂה־כֵּ֖ן גַּם־אָֽנִי׃ (לא) לֹא־תַעֲשֶׂ֣ה כֵ֔ן לַיקוק אֱלֹקֶ֑יךָ כִּי֩ כָּל־תּוֹעֲבַ֨ת יקוק אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׂנֵ֗א עָשׂוּ֙ לֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם כִּ֣י גַ֤ם אֶת־בְּנֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־בְּנֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם יִשְׂרְפ֥וּ בָאֵ֖שׁ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

(1) These are the laws and rules that you must carefully observe in the land that the LORD, God of your fathers, is giving you to possess, as long as you live on earth. (2) You must destroy all the sites at which the nations you are to dispossess worshiped their gods, whether on lofty mountains and on hills or under any luxuriant tree. (3) Tear down their altars, smash their pillars, put their sacred posts to the fire, and cut down the images of their gods, obliterating their name from that site. (4) Do not worship the LORD your God in like manner, (5) but look only to the site that the LORD your God will choose amidst all your tribes as His habitation, to establish His name there. There you are to go, (6) and there you are to bring your burnt offerings and other sacrifices, your tithes and contributions, your votive and freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks. (7) Together with your households, you shall feast there before the LORD your God, happy in all the undertakings in which the LORD your God has blessed you. (8) You shall not act at all as we now act here, every man as he pleases, (9) because you have not yet come to the allotted haven that the LORD your God is giving you. (10) When you cross the Jordan and settle in the land that the LORD your God is allotting to you, and He grants you safety from all your enemies around you and you live in security, (11) then you must bring everything that I command you to the site where the LORD your God will choose to establish His name: your burnt offerings and other sacrifices, your tithes and contributions, and all the choice votive offerings that you vow to the LORD. (12) And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God with your sons and daughters and with your male and female slaves, along with the Levite in your settlements, for he has no territorial allotment among you. (13) Take care not to sacrifice your burnt offerings in any place you like, (14) but only in the place that the LORD will choose in one of your tribal territories. There you shall sacrifice your burnt offerings and there you shall observe all that I enjoin upon you. (15) But whenever you desire, you may slaughter and eat meat in any of your settlements, according to the blessing that the LORD your God has granted you. The unclean and the clean alike may partake of it, as of the gazelle and the deer. (16) But you must not partake of the blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. (17) You may not partake in your settlements of the tithes of your new grain or wine or oil, or of the firstlings of your herds and flocks, or of any of the votive offerings that you vow, or of your freewill offerings, or of your contributions. (18) These you must consume before the LORD your God in the place that the LORD your God will choose—you and your sons and your daughters, your male and female slaves, and the Levite in your settlements—happy before the LORD your God in all your undertakings. (19) Be sure not to neglect the Levite as long as you live in your land. (20) When the LORD enlarges your territory, as He has promised you, and you say, “I shall eat some meat,” for you have the urge to eat meat, you may eat meat whenever you wish. (21) If the place where the LORD has chosen to establish His name is too far from you, you may slaughter any of the cattle or sheep that the LORD gives you, as I have instructed you; and you may eat to your heart’s content in your settlements. (22) Eat it, however, as the gazelle and the deer are eaten: the unclean may eat it together with the clean. (23) But make sure that you do not partake of the blood; for the blood is the life, and you must not consume the life with the flesh. (24) You must not partake of it; you must pour it out on the ground like water: (25) you must not partake of it, in order that it may go well with you and with your descendants to come, for you will be doing what is right in the sight of the LORD. (26) But such sacred and votive donations as you may have shall be taken by you to the site that the LORD will choose. (27) You shall offer your burnt offerings, both the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the LORD your God; and of your other sacrifices, the blood shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, and you shall eat the flesh. (28) Be careful to heed all these commandments that I enjoin upon you; thus it will go well with you and with your descendants after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God. (29) When the LORD your God has cut down before you the nations that you are about to enter and dispossess, and you have dispossessed them and settled in their land, (30) beware of being lured into their ways after they have been wiped out before you! Do not inquire about their gods, saying, “How did those nations worship their gods? I too will follow those practices.” (31) You shall not act thus toward the LORD your God, for they perform for their gods every abhorrent act that the LORD detests; they even offer up their sons and daughters in fire to their gods.

כִּי יַכְרִית יקוק. אָמַר לָהֶם הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, חַיֵּיכֶם, אֲנִי עוֹשֶׂה מִלְחֲמוֹתֵיכֶם וּמַכְתִּיב עֲלֵיכֶם שֶׁאַתֶּם הֲרַגְתֶּם אוֹתָם. בּוֹא וּרְאֵה, אֵין מַעֲשִׂים שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא כְּמַעֲשֵׂה מֶלֶךְ בָּשָׂר וָדָם. מֶלֶךְ בָּשָׂר וָדָם יוֹצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה, לִגְיוֹנוֹתָיו יוֹצְאִים לְפָנָיו. אִם נוֹצְחִים, הֵם בָּאִים וְעוֹשִׂים עֲטָרָה וּמַכְלִילִין אוֹתוֹ. אֲבָל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה כֵן, אֶלָּא עוֹשֶׂה הַמִּלְחָמָה וְנוֹתֵן עֲטָרָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: לְמַכֵּה מְלָכִים גְּדוֹלִים, לְסִיחוֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמוֹרִי, וּלְעוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן (תהלים קלו, יז-כ). וְנָתַן עֲטָרָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד יקוק וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הִכּוּם (יהושע יב, ו). וְכֵן בִּיהוֹשֻׁעַ מַה כָּתוּב, וַיקוק הִשְׁלִיךְ עֲלֵיהֶם אֲבָנִים גְּדוֹלוֹת מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם (שם י, יא). וְנֶאֱמַר, וְאֵלֶּה מַלְכֵי הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר הִכָּה יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל (שם יב, ז):

(1) When the Lord cuts down (Deuteronomy 12:29): The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel, "By your lives, I will conduct your wars and write about you that you killed them." Come and see, the acts of the Holy One, blessed be He, are not like the acts of a king of flesh and blood: [When] a king of flesh and blood goes out to war, his legions go out in front of him. If they are victorious, they come and make a crown and crown him. But the Holy One, blessed be He, does not do like this, but rather He conducts the war, and give the crown to Israel, as it is stated (Psalms 136:17-20), "Who struck down great kings, [...]. Sihon, king of the Amorites,[...]. Og, king of Bashan." But He gave the crown to Israel, as it is stated (Joshua 12:5), "Moshe, the servant of God, and Israel smote them." And so [too], with Yehoshua, what is written? "And the Lord hurled huge stones on them from the sky" (Joshua 10:11). And [yet] it is stated (Joshua 12:7), "And these are the kings of the land that Yehoshua and the Children of Israel slew." So that we inherit their land, He cut them down from the world, in order that we would enter and inherit houses filled with all good things. As all the days that Israel was present, they were swept and wandering in the wilderness for forty years. Yet they had been fitting to go up [to the Land of Israel] immediately, as it is stated (Exodus 3:17), "I will take you out of the misery of Egypt," to a good and spacious land. But they did not go in immediately. As when they left from Egypt, the seven nations [inhabiting the land] heard that [the Israelites] were coming to inherit [the land]. What did they do? They cut down the trees, stopped up the springs and destroyed the homes, such that if [the Israelites] would enter, they would find nothing [worthwhile there]. The Holy One, blessed be He, said, "If I bring them in right away, they will find it desolate, and I promised them that they would find it full of all of good things." What did He do? He held them up in the wilderness forty years, such that the Canaanites disregarded Israel, saying they are not coming. [Hence] they rose and planted trees, they fixed the wells and the cities, such that Israel would come when it was built, to fulfill that which is stated (Deuteronomy 6:11), "Houses full of all good things." This is [the meaning of] that which is written (Exodus 13:17), "God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines." Once they fixed everything, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe, "Why are you standing? 'Go up from here, you and the people' (Exodus 33:1). Make war with them and cut them down." And Israel said to Moshe, "When do we enter the land." [His answer was:] When the Lord, your God cuts down the nations within it shall you enter.

רַבִּי יוּדָן בְּשֵׁם עֲקִילוּס אָמַר, לָזֶה נָאֶה לְקָרְאוֹ אֱלוֹקַּ, בְּנֹהַג שֶׁבָּעוֹלָם מֶלֶךְ בָּשָׂר וָדָם מִתְקַלֵּס בַּמְּדִינָה, וַעֲדַיִן לֹא בָּנָה לָהּ דִּימוֹסִיּוֹת, וַעֲדַיִן לֹא בָּנָה לָהּ פְּרִיבְטָאוֹת, בַּתְּחִלָּה מַזְכִּיר שְׁמוֹ וּלְבַסּוֹף קָטִיזְמָה שֶׁלּוֹ. בְּרַם יְחִידוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, בִּתְּחִלָּה פָּעַל וּלְבַסּוֹף נִתְקַלֵּס.

שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן עֲזַאי אוֹמֵר (שמואל ב כב, לו): וְעַנֹתְךָ תַרְבֵּנִי, בָּשָׂר וָדָם מַזְכִּיר שְׁמוֹ וְאַחַר כָּךְ שִׁבְחוֹ, פְּלַן אֲגוֹסְטוֹלִי, פְּלַן פְּרַאטָאטָא. אֲבָל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֵינוֹ כֵן, אֶלָּא מִשֶּׁבָּרָא צָרְכֵי עוֹלָמוֹ אַחַר כָּךְ מַזְכִּיר שְׁמוֹ, בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא, וְאַחַר כָּךְ אֱלֹקִים:

(12) Rabbi Yudan in the name of Akilus said: for Him, it is appropriate to call Him God; according to the custom in the world, a king of flesh and blood is honored in [his] domain, even at the point when he has not established amenities at public expense for it, and even at the point when he has not built amenities at private expense for it; first, he recites his name, and then his creation. But for the Unique One of the universe, first He formed and then He was named. Shimon the son of Azzai said (2 Samuel 22:36) "your condescension has made me great"; a flesh and blood [human] recites his name and afterwards such-and-such his title, [i.e.] X the Augustalis, or X whatever his title (pro titulo). But the Holy One, blessed be He does not act this way; only after He created the necessities of his world, then He recites his name: [which is why] "In the beginning he created" [comes first] and only afterwards "God".

(לג) יִרְאַ֣ת יקוק מוּסַ֣ר חָכְמָ֑ה וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָב֣וֹד עֲנָוָֽה׃

(33) The fear of the LORD is the discipline of wisdom; Humility precedes honor.

(יב) לִפְנֵי־שֶׁ֭בֶר יִגְבַּ֣הּ לֵב־אִ֑ישׁ וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָב֣וֹד עֲנָוָֽה׃

(1) He who isolates himself pursues his desires; He disdains all competence. (2) The fool does not desire understanding, But only to air his thoughts. (3) Comes the wicked man comes derision, And with the rogue, contempt. (4) The words a man speaks are deep waters, A flowing stream, a fountain of wisdom. (5) It is not right to be partial to the guilty And subvert the innocent in judgment. (6) The words of a fool lead to strife; His speech invites blows. (7) The fool’s speech is his ruin; His words are a trap for him. (8) The words of a querulous man are bruising; They penetrate one’s inmost parts. (9) One who is slack in his work Is a brother to a vandal. (10) The name of the LORD is a tower of strength To which the righteous man runs and is safe. (11) The wealth of a rich man is his fortress; In his fancy it is a protective wall. (12) Before ruin a man’s heart is proud; Humility goes before honor. (13) To answer a man before hearing him out Is foolish and disgraceful. (14) A man’s spirit can sustain him through illness; But low spirits—who can bear them? (15) The mind of an intelligent man acquires knowledge; The ears of the wise seek out knowledge. (16) A man’s gift eases his way And gives him access to the great. (17) The first to plead his case seems right Till the other party examines him. (18) The lot puts an end to strife And separates those locked in dispute. (19) A brother offended is more formidable than a stronghold; Such strife is like the bars of a fortress. (20) A man’s belly is filled by the fruit of his mouth; He will be filled by the produce of his lips. (21) Death and life are in the power of the tongue; Those who love it will eat its fruit. (22) He who finds a wife has found happiness And has won the favor of the LORD. (23) The poor man speaks beseechingly; The rich man’s answer is harsh. (24) There are companions to keep one company, And there is a friend more devoted than a brother.

אֵיזֶהוּ מְכֻבָּד, הַמְכַבֵּד אֶת הַבְּרִיּוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמואל א ב) כִּי מְכַבְּדַי אֲכַבֵּד וּבֹזַי יֵקָלּוּ:

(1) Ben Zoma said:Who is wise? He who learns from every man, as it is said: “From all who taught me have I gained understanding” (Psalms 119:99). Who is mighty? He who subdues his [evil] inclination, as it is said: “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city” (Proverbs 16:3). Who is rich? He who rejoices in his lot, as it is said: “You shall enjoy the fruit of your labors, you shall be happy and you shall prosper” (Psalms 128:2) “You shall be happy” in this world, “and you shall prosper” in the world to come. Who is he that is honored? He who honors his fellow human beings as it is said: “For I honor those that honor Me, but those who spurn Me shall be dishonored” (I Samuel 2:30).

(כז) אָ֘כֹ֤ל דְּבַ֣שׁ הַרְבּ֣וֹת לֹא־ט֑וֹב וְחֵ֖קֶר כְּבֹדָ֣ם כָּבֽוֹד׃
(27) It is not good to eat much honey, Nor is it honorable to search for honor.

ושנא את הרבנות כיצד? מלמד שלא יניח אדם עטרה מעצמו בראשו. אבל אחרים יניחו לו שנאמר (משלי כ״ז:ב׳) יהללך זר ולא פיך, נכרי ואל שפתיך ... רבי יוסי אומר כל המגביה עצמו על דברי תורה סוף שמשפילין אותו וכל המשפיל עצמו על דברי תורה סוף שמגביהין אותו:

Hate power. How so? This teaches that a person should not place a crown on his own head. But others can place it upon him, as it says (Proverbs 27:2), “May a stranger praise you, but not your own mouth; a foreigner, but not your own lips.”
Rabbi Akiva said: Anyone who raises himself above the words of Torah is like a carcass cast off on the side of the road. Everyone who passes it sits down and puts his hand out to check for breath, and then backs away from it and leaves, as it says (Proverbs 30:32), “If you degrade yourself with arrogance, and if you scheme, a hand to your mouth.” [(Ben Azzai said: Learn this idea out of the verse itself:)] If a person degrades himself for words of Torah by eating rotten dates, and dressing in filthy clothes, and sitting and watching at the door of the sages, then all who pass by will say, “Perhaps he is an idiot.” But in the end, you will find that he has the whole Torah with him. (Rabbi Yosei would say:) Anyone who raises himself above the words of Torah, in the end they will debase him; but anyone who debases himself for the sake of the words of Torah, in the end they will elevate him.

רבי זירא הוה מיטמר למיסמכיה דאמר רבי אלעזר לעולם הוי קבל וקיים כיון דשמעה להא דא"ר אלעזר אין אדם עולה לגדולה אלא א"כ מוחלין לו על כל עונותיו אמצי ליה אנפשיה:

The Gemara relates: Rabbi Zeira would habitually hide himself so that they would not ordain him. He did this due to the fact that Rabbi Elazar said: Always be obscure and remain alive, meaning the more humble and unknown you make yourself, the longer you will live. When he heard that which Rabbi Elazar also said: A person does not rise to greatness unless all his sins are forgiven, he understood that there are also benefits to greatness, and he presented himself to the Nasi in order that he would ordain him.

(1) When the LORD your God has cut down the nations whose land the LORD your God is assigning to you, and you have dispossessed them and settled in their towns and homes, (2) you shall set aside three cities in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess. (3) You shall survey the distances, and divide into three parts the territory of the country that the LORD your God has allotted to you, so that any manslayer may have a place to flee to.— (4) Now this is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live: one who has killed another unwittingly, without having been his enemy in the past. (5) For instance, a man goes with his neighbor into a grove to cut wood; as his hand swings the ax to cut down a tree, the ax-head flies off the handle and strikes the other so that he dies. That man shall flee to one of these cities and live.— (6) Otherwise, when the distance is great, the blood-avenger, pursuing the manslayer in hot anger, may overtake him and kill him; yet he did not incur the death penalty, since he had never been the other’s enemy. (7) That is why I command you: set aside three cities. (8) And when the LORD your God enlarges your territory, as He swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land that He promised to give your fathers— (9) if you faithfully observe all this Instruction that I enjoin upon you this day, to love the LORD your God and to walk in His ways at all times—then you shall add three more towns to those three. (10) Thus blood of the innocent will not be shed, bringing bloodguilt upon you in the land that the LORD your God is allotting to you. (11) If, however, a person who is the enemy of another lies in wait for him and sets upon him and strikes him a fatal blow and then flees to one of these towns, (12) the elders of his town shall have him brought back from there and shall hand him over to the blood-avenger to be put to death; (13) you must show him no pity. Thus you will purge Israel of the blood of the innocent, and it will go well with you. (14) You shall not move your countryman’s landmarks, set up by previous generations, in the property that will be allotted to you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess. (15) A single witness may not validate against a person any guilt or blame for any offense that may be committed; a case can be valid only on the testimony of two witnesses or more. (16) If a man appears against another to testify maliciously and gives false testimony against him, (17) the two parties to the dispute shall appear before the LORD, before the priests or magistrates in authority at the time, (18) and the magistrates shall make a thorough investigation. If the man who testified is a false witness, if he has testified falsely against his fellow, (19) you shall do to him as he schemed to do to his fellow. Thus you will sweep out evil from your midst; (20) others will hear and be afraid, and such evil things will not again be done in your midst. (21) Nor must you show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
