Open for Business: Preparing for the Seder
In this project based learning (PBL) lesson, students will create a fictitious business which helps clients prepare for the seder. Students will research the haggadah and text from the Sefaria library to determine how to prepare for the seder. They will create a list of services that they will offer to their customers which they will present in an attractive brochure or in a commercial.
Big Idea: The seder is conducted in a proscribed, orderly manner which is explained in the haggadah and other texts. Preparation of ritual items and foods is an important aspect of getting ready for Pesach and the seder.
Learning objectives:
Students will be able to identify the ritual items and foods used at the seder.
Students will be able to produce an advertisement that outlines necessary seder preparations.

Step 1: Research
  • Look through the haggadah to determine what objects and foods are necessary to conduct a seder.
  • (optional) Research texts in the Sefaria library (Mishnah Pesachim, Talmud Bavli Pesachim, Haggadah commentaries, sheets) to determine the requirements for the objects and foods.
  • Research on the internet for additional information about the ritual requirements for the seder.
  • You may broaden your research (and project) by including other preparations for Passover, such as cleaning for Passover, bedikat chametz (checking for chametz), etc.
Step 2: Create a business
  • Name your business.
  • Make a list of the services that your business will provide.
  • Write a short description of the service.
  • Assign a price to each of your services.
  • Write any other information that the customer will need (phone number, hours, etc)
Step 3: Advertise your business - Choose from one of the following choices
  • Design a brochure for your business. Suggested websites include Canva and Venngage.
  • Record a commercial for your business. iMovie and WeVideo are good platforms to use for recording.
Step 4: Put it all together
Create a source sheet which assembles all parts of the project. The source sheet can include:
  • Texts from your research
  • Description of the services you are providing
  • A picture of the brochure or the recorded commercial
  • Directions for making a source sheet and adding text and media can be found here.
