Hakarat haTov - awareness of the interlinking of all things. First - hakarat haTov for myself - awareness of all of the pieces that make me up, not as foreign, but as part of me, and appreciated.
This Hakarat HaTov readies us for the presence of Schehinah - and joy.
It's not about thinking. The thinking may lay the ground work, but there has to be a hiatus of thinking.
(c.f. Rambam Sefer HaMitzvot 3.)
(3) To love him, as it is stated, "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God" (Deuteronomy 6:5, Deuteronomy 11:1)
Joy and Love come together. The Rambam presents them together. When he speaks of Joy, he speaks of Love, and when he speaks of Love, he speaks of Joy. And the Schehinah is present through that Love and Joy.
This expanded awareness comes through song.
שיר - means song, but also to see.

Song.
Song that includes care for others,
care for creation that transcends narrow self interest.

Gur Aryeh - man's recognition and prayer were both necessary for the rain. Both the awareness and the prayer. If he recognizes but doesn't ask - he's worse than one who doesn't recognize. It's possible to both be makir tov and kafui tov.
