Kavanot for the Hanukkiah
Before lighting the shamesh:
It is You who light my lamp
Adonai, my God, lights up my darkness.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Chanukah candles.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe who made miracles for our ancestors in their days in this season.
On the first night:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.
After lighting on the first night:
A light shines for the upright in the darkness;
God is gracious, compassionate, and beneficent.
After lighting on the second night:
Though I have fallen, I rise again;
Though I sit in darkness,
Adonai is my light.
After lighting on the third night:
I, Adonai, have called you in righteousness,
and will hold your hand, and will create you,
and give you as a covenant of the people,
for a light to the nations.
After lighting on the fourth night:
Send forth Your light and Your truth;
they will lead me;
they will bring me to Your holy mountain, to Your dwelling-place.
After lighting on the fifth night:
The lamp of God is the soul of man, searching all his inmost parts.
After lighting on the sixth night:
The day is Yours, the night also;
it was You who set in place the orb of the sun;
You fixed all the boundaries of the earth;
summer and winter—You made them.
After lighting on the seventh night:
Your word is a lamp to my feet,
a light for my path.
The unfolding of Your words gives light,
it gives understanding to the simple.
After lighting on the eighth night:
The Jews enjoyed light and gladness, happiness and honor.
After each night (From Psalms and Shacharit Amidah):
With You is the fountain of life;
by Your light do we see light.
Bless us, our Father, all as one, with the light of Your face. For by the light of Your face You have given us,
Lord our God, the Torah of life and love of kindness, righteousness, blessing, compassion, life, and peace.
