Vayeizei The meaning of the "kiss-hello"
(יא) וַיִּשַּׁ֥ק יַעֲקֹ֖ב לְרָחֵ֑ל וַיִּשָּׂ֥א אֶת־קֹל֖וֹ וַיֵּֽבְךְּ׃
(11) And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
(יג) וַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ לָבָ֜ן אֶת־שֵׁ֣מַע ׀ יַעֲקֹ֣ב בֶּן־אֲחֹת֗וֹ וַיָּ֤רָץ לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַיְחַבֶּק־לוֹ֙ וַיְנַשֶּׁק־ל֔וֹ וַיְבִיאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ וַיְסַפֵּ֣ר לְלָבָ֔ן אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃
(13) And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
(ד) וַיָּ֨רָץ עֵשָׂ֤ו לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־צַוָּארָ֖ו וַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄ וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃
(4) And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept.
(יד) וַיִּפֹּ֛ל עַל־צַוְּארֵ֥י בִנְיָמִֽן־אָחִ֖יו וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן בָּכָ֖ה עַל־צַוָּארָֽיו׃ (טו) וַיְנַשֵּׁ֥ק לְכָל־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֵּ֣בְךְּ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְאַ֣חֲרֵי כֵ֔ן דִּבְּר֥וּ אֶחָ֖יו אִתּֽוֹ׃
(14) And he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. (15) And he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them; and after that his brethren talked with him.
(מא) הַנַּעַר֮ בָּא֒ וְדָוִ֗ד קָ֚ם מֵאֵ֣צֶל הַנֶּ֔גֶב וַיִּפֹּ֨ל לְאַפָּ֥יו אַ֛רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ פְּעָמִ֑ים וַֽיִּשְּׁק֣וּ ׀ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵ֗הוּ וַיִּבְכּוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵ֔הוּ עַד־דָּוִ֖ד הִגְדִּֽיל׃
(41) And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the South, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down three times; and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
(ב) יִשָּׁקֵ֙נִי֙ מִנְּשִׁיק֣וֹת פִּ֔יהוּ כִּֽי־טוֹבִ֥ים דֹּדֶ֖יךָ מִיָּֽיִן׃
(2) Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth— For thy love is better than wine.

(יב) ויהי כאשר ראה יעקב ויגש יעקב ויגל את האבן - אמר רבי יוחנן: כזה שהוא מעביר פקק מעל פי צלוחית. וישק יעקב לרחל, כל נשיקה לתפלות, בר מן תלת. נשיקה של גדולה. נשיקה של פרקים. נשיקה של פרישות. נשיקה של גדולה, (ש"א י): ויקח שמואל את פך השמן ויצוק על ראשו וישקהו. נשיקה של פרקים, (שמות ד) וילך ויפגשהו בהר האלהים וישק לו. נשיקה של פרישות, (רות א) ותשק ערפה לחמותה ורות דבקה בה. רבי תנחומא אמר: אף נשיקה של קריבות, שנאמר: וישק יעקב לרחל, שהיתה קרובתו. וישא את קולו ויבך למה בכה? אמר אליעזר: בשעה שהלך להביא את רבקה מה כתיב ביה: ויקח העבד עשרה גמלים וגו'. ואני לא נזם אחד ולא צמיד אחד! דבר אחר: למה בכה? שראה שאינה נכנסת עמו לקבורה, הדא היא, דהיא אמרה לה: לכן ישכב עמך הלילה. אמרה לה: עמך הוא דמיך, עמי לית הוא דמיך. דבר אחר: למה בכה? שראה האנשים מלחשים אלו לאלו מפני שנשקה, מה בא זה לחדש לנו דבר ערוה, שמשעה שלקה העולם בדור המבול, עמדו אומות העולם וגדרו עצמן מן הערוה. הדא אמרת: שאנשי מזרח גדורים מן הערוה:

"And it came to pass, when Jacob saw, etc., that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone..." Rabbi Yochanan said: Like one who removed a stopper from the mouth of a bottle." (Genesis 29:11) "And Jacob kissed Rachel..." All kisses are frivolous except for three: a kiss of [ascendancy to] greatness, an episodic kiss [of meeting after a time], and a kiss of separation. A kiss of greatness, such as (1 Samuel 10:1) "Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him..." An episodic kiss, such as Rabbi Yochanan said: Like one who removed a stopper from the mouth of a bottle." (Genesis 29:11) "And Jacob kissed Rachel..." All kisses are frivolous except for three: a kiss of [ascendancy to] greatness, an episodic kiss [of meeting after a time], and a kiss of separation. An episodic kiss, such as (Exodus 4:27) "... and he [Moses] went, and met him [Aaron] in the mountain of God, and kissed him." A kiss of separation, such as (Ruth 1:14) "... and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law; but Ruth cleaved unto her." Rabbi Tanchuma said: also the kiss of relatives, as is stated (Genesis 29:11) "And Jacob kissed Rachel...", for she was his relative. (ibid.) "... and lifted up his voice, and wept." Why did he [Jacob] weep?... Another explanation: why did he [Jacob] weep? For he saw the men whispering to one another because he kissed her, 'What is this one coming to innovate for us a matter of sexual impropriety?' For from the time the world was smitten in the Generation of the Deluge, the nations of the world stood and girded themselves from sexual impropriety. This is what is said, that the residents of the east are fenced off from sexual impropriety.

(יט) וְאֵ֛לֶּה תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת יִצְחָ֖ק בֶּן־אַבְרָהָ֑ם אַבְרָהָ֖ם הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־יִצְחָֽק׃

(19) And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begot Isaac.

(א) ואלה תולדות יצחק. יעקב ועשו האמורים בפרשה:

(ב) אברהם הוליד את יצחק. על ידי שכתב הכתוב יצחק בן אברהם הזקק לומר אברהם הוליד את יצחק, לפי שהיו ליצני הדור אומרים מאבימלך נתעברה שרה, שהרי כמה שנים שהתה עם אברהם ולא נתעברה המנו, מה עשה הקדוש ברוך הוא, צר קלסתר פניו של יצחק דומה לאברהם, והעידו הכל אברהם הוליד את יצחק, וזהו שכתב כאן יצחק בן אברהם היה, שהרי עדות יש שאברהם הוליד את יצחק:

(1) "These are the generatations of Yitzchak": Yaakov and Eisav who are spoken of (further on) in the passage.

(2) "Avraham fathered Yitzchak": Since the Scriptures wrote "Yitzchak son of Avraham",it was compelled to say "Avraham fathered Yitzchak". For the scoffers of the generation said that Sarah became pregnant from Avimelech, for after all, she resided many years with Avraham and didn't become pregnant from him. What did the Hakadosh Baruch Hu do? He formed Yitzchak's visage to resemble that of Avraham, and so all testified "Avraham fathered Yitzchak". And this is what is written here, that Yitzchak was the son of Avraham, for there was testimony that Avraham fathered Yitzchak.

Questions:

(1) According to Rabbi Tanchuma (source 8), Yaakov's kiss was a kiss of relatives. What other kisses in Tanach could be similarly categorized?

(2) Before Rabbi Tanchuma added this new category, how would we categorize Yaakov's kiss? Under which of the three categories?

(3) When the midrash details the onlookers' reaction, is this on the level? Or is this an instance of the midrash attributing a possible reader's attitude to the text, and having the text, or Biblical character addressing that misperception? Consider Rashi to Bereishit 25:19 (source 9 and 10).
