(5) And He brought him outside, and said: ‘Look now towards the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them’; and He said to him: ‘So shall your offspring be.’
This people is compared to the dust and compared to the stars. When they go down, they go down to the dust, and when they rise they rise to the stars.
(א) וספר הכוכבים. לא בשביל רבוי הבטיחו כאן שהרי כבר המשיל רבוי זרעו לעפר הארץ אלא הוסיף כאן שיהיו הרבה אנשי מעלה שיאירו ככוכבים. ולא כמו שפחד וירא פן יהיו פחותי ערך:
(1) And count the stars: Not because of their abundance did He promise him here, since He had already compared the multitude of his children to the dust of the earth, but rather to add here that they will be many men of stature, who will bring light like the stars. And it was not as he had feared [upon hearing of their comparison to dust], lest they be small of worth.
(ב) אם תוכל לספר אתם. דאע״ג שיש בכל אוה״ע אנשי מעלה ומאירים לעמם ככוכבים אבל מעט היו אז לפי ערך ההמון. משא״כ זרע אברהם יש גדולי מעלה יותר מערך ההמון כמש״כ בס׳ דברים עה״פ לא מרבכם מכל העמים:
(2) If you will be able to count them: Because although there are in all the nations of the world men of stature, who bring light to their nations like stars, but they were few in number then in comparison to the amount of the masses. This is not so with the offspring of Avraham; there are great people much more than the amount of the masses, as it is written in the book of Devarim on the verse, "Not because of your being more than all the other nations [...has Hashem chosen you as His people, for you are the smallest]."
[אמר] רבי בשם רבי יהודה ברבי אלעאי דרך ארץ הוא הגדול מונה לגדול והקטן מונה לקטן, עשו שהוא גדול מונה לחמה שהיא גדולה, ויעקב שהוא קטן מונה ללבנה שהיא קטנה, אמר רב נחמן הא סימן טב גדול שליט ביום ואינו שליט בלילה, כך עשו הרשע שולט בעולם הזה ואינו שולט בעולם הבא, הקטן שליט ביום ובלילה כך יעקב שולט בעולם הזה ובעולם הבא, רב נחמן אמר כל זמן שאורו של גדול מבהיק אין אורו של קטן מתפרסם, שקע אורו של גדול אורו של קטן מתפרסם, כך כל זמן שאורו של עשו מבהיק אין אורו של יעקב מתפרסם, שקע אורו של עשו נתפרסם אורו של יעקב שנאמר קומי אורי וגו'.
Rebbi said in the name of Rabi Yehuda bar Ilai: the way of the world is that the greater count according to the greater, and the smaller count according to the smaller. Eisav, who is greater, counts according to the sun, which is greater, and Yaakov, who is smaller, counts according to the moon, which is smaller. Rav Nachman said: it's a good sign; the greater one rules during the day and does not rule at night, so too the wicked Eisav rules in This World and does not rule in the World to Come. The smaller one rules by day and by night, so too Yaakov rules in This World and in the World to Come. Rav Nachman said: all the time that the light of the greater one shines, the light of the smaller one is not noticed; when the light of the greater one sets, the light of the smaller one is noticed. So too as long as the light of Eisav is shining, the light of Yaakov is not noticed; once Eisav's light sets, the light of Yaakov is noticed, as it is said: "Arise and give light..."
(1) Arise, shine, for your light has come, And the glory of Hashem is shining upon you.
