- Why do we understand God to have the heaven and earth act as witnesses?
- What does it encourage us to think about with regard to ourselves?
(Partially quoting Rashi) (15) Variantly: "Hear, O heavens, etc.": Moses appointed over Israel two witnesses (heaven and earth) that live forever, telling them: I am flesh and blood; tomorrow I will die. If they wish to say that they never received the Torah, who will come and refute them? Therefore, God appointed for them two witnesses that live forever. And the Holy One Blessed be God made this (Ha'azinu) song a witness, viz. (Devarim 31:19) "so that this song be for Me a witness in the children of Israel." God said: The sun will be witness for them below, and I, above.
(1) To teach you [that] the Holy One, blessed be God - may God's name be blessed - sometimes appears and sometimes does not appear; sometimes hears and sometimes does not want to hear; sometimes answers and sometimes does not answer; sometimes is pursued and sometimes is not pursued; sometimes is found and sometimes is not found; sometimes is close and sometimes is not close.
- What does this mean for us?
- How does it connect to the Torah portion?
- How does it connect to the idea from Sifrei Devarim above?
- Why are these words so potent at this time of year, between Yom Kippur and Sukkot?
- Again, how do they connect to the words from Sifrei Devarim as well as the Torah portion?
(1) Akabyah ben Mahalalel said: mark well three things and you will not come into the power of sin: Know from where you come, and where you are going, and before whom you are destined to give an account and reckoning. From where do you come? From a putrid drop. Where are you going? To a place of dust, of worm and of maggot. Before whom you are destined to give an account and reckoning? Before the King of the kings of kings, the Holy One, blessed be he.
