Manah Achat Apayim: Face Time... or In Your Face

(א) וַיְהִי֩ אִ֨ישׁ אֶחָ֜ד מִן־הָרָמָתַ֛יִם צוֹפִ֖ים מֵהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וּשְׁמ֡וֹ אֶ֠לְקָנָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָ֧ם בֶּן־אֱלִיה֛וּא בֶּן־תֹּ֥חוּ בֶן־צ֖וּף אֶפְרָתִֽי׃ (ב) וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים שֵׁ֤ם אַחַת֙ חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י לִפְנִנָּה֙ יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃ (ג) וְעָלָה֩ הָאִ֨ישׁ הַה֤וּא מֵֽעִירוֹ֙ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֔ימָה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֧ת וְלִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּשִׁלֹ֑ה וְשָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵלִ֗י חָפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣נְחָ֔ס כֹּהֲנִ֖ים לַיהוָֽה׃

(ד) וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וְנָתַ֞ן לִפְנִנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּֽלְכָל־בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ מָנֽוֹת׃ (ה) וּלְחַנָּ֕ה יִתֵּ֛ן מָנָ֥ה אַחַ֖ת אַפָּ֑יִם כִּ֤י אֶת־חַנָּה֙ אָהֵ֔ב וַֽיהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר רַחְמָֽהּ׃ (ו) וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה צָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־כַּ֔עַס בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ כִּֽי־סָגַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃ (ז) וְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה שָׁנָ֣ה בְשָׁנָ֗ה מִדֵּ֤י עֲלֹתָהּ֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה כֵּ֖ן תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֹאכַֽל׃ (ח) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֜הּ אֶלְקָנָ֣ה אִישָׁ֗הּ חַנָּה֙ לָ֣מֶה תִבְכִּ֗י וְלָ֙מֶה֙ לֹ֣א תֹֽאכְלִ֔י וְלָ֖מֶה יֵרַ֣ע לְבָבֵ֑ךְ הֲל֤וֹא אָֽנֹכִי֙ ט֣וֹב לָ֔ךְ מֵעֲשָׂרָ֖ה בָּנִֽים׃

(ט) וַתָּ֣קָם חַנָּ֔ה אַחֲרֵ֛י אָכְלָ֥ה בְשִׁלֹ֖ה וְאַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁתֹ֑ה וְעֵלִ֣י הַכֹּהֵ֗ן יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־הַכִּסֵּ֔א עַל־מְזוּזַ֖ת הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ (י) וְהִ֖יא מָ֣רַת נָ֑פֶשׁ וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל עַל־יְהוָ֖ה וּבָכֹ֥ה תִבְכֶּֽה׃ (יא) וַתִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר וַתֹּאמַ֗ר יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אִם־רָאֹ֥ה תִרְאֶ֣ה ׀ בָּעֳנִ֣י אֲמָתֶ֗ךָ וּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙ וְלֹֽא־תִשְׁכַּ֣ח אֶת־אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ זֶ֣רַע אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וּנְתַתִּ֤יו לַֽיהוָה֙ כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו וּמוֹרָ֖ה לֹא־יַעֲלֶ֥ה עַל־רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃

(יב) וְהָיָה֙ כִּ֣י הִרְבְּתָ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְעֵלִ֖י שֹׁמֵ֥ר אֶת־פִּֽיהָ׃ (יג) וְחַנָּ֗ה הִ֚יא מְדַבֶּ֣רֶת עַל־לִבָּ֔הּ רַ֚ק שְׂפָתֶ֣יהָ נָּע֔וֹת וְקוֹלָ֖הּ לֹ֣א יִשָּׁמֵ֑עַ וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ עֵלִ֖י לְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃ (יד) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ עֵלִ֔י עַד־מָתַ֖י תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑ין הָסִ֥ירִי אֶת־יֵינֵ֖ךְ מֵעָלָֽיִךְ׃ (טו) וַתַּ֨עַן חַנָּ֤ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֲדֹנִ֔י אִשָּׁ֤ה קְשַׁת־ר֙וּחַ֙ אָנֹ֔כִי וְיַ֥יִן וְשֵׁכָ֖ר לֹ֣א שָׁתִ֑יתִי וָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ (טז) אַל־תִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ לִפְנֵ֖י בַּת־בְּלִיָּ֑עַל כִּֽי־מֵרֹ֥ב שִׂיחִ֛י וְכַעְסִ֖י דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי עַד־הֵֽנָּה׃ (יז) וַיַּ֧עַן עֵלִ֛י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לְכִ֣י לְשָׁל֑וֹם וֵאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל יִתֵּן֙ אֶת־שֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתְּ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃ (יח) וַתֹּ֕אמֶר תִּמְצָ֧א שִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וַתֵּ֨לֶךְ הָאִשָּׁ֤ה לְדַרְכָּהּ֙ וַתֹּאכַ֔ל וּפָנֶ֥יהָ לֹא־הָיוּ־לָ֖הּ עֽוֹד׃ (יט) וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ בַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־בֵּיתָ֖ם הָרָמָ֑תָה וַיֵּ֤דַע אֶלְקָנָה֙ אֶת־חַנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיִּֽזְכְּרֶ֖הָ יְהוָֽה׃ (כ) וַיְהִי֙ לִתְקֻפ֣וֹת הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתַּ֥הַר חַנָּ֖ה וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֤א אֶת־שְׁמוֹ֙ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י מֵיְהוָ֖ה שְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃ (כא) וַיַּ֛עַל הָאִ֥ישׁ אֶלְקָנָ֖ה וְכָל־בֵּית֑וֹ לִזְבֹּ֧חַ לַֽיהוָ֛ה אֶת־זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִ֖ים וְאֶת־נִדְרֽוֹ׃ (כב) וְחַנָּ֖ה לֹ֣א עָלָ֑תָה כִּֽי־אָמְרָ֣ה לְאִישָׁ֗הּ עַ֣ד יִגָּמֵ֤ל הַנַּ֙עַר֙ וַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יו וְנִרְאָה֙ אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְיָ֥שַׁב שָׁ֖ם עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃ (כג) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהּ֩ אֶלְקָנָ֨ה אִישָׁ֜הּ עֲשִׂ֧י הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינַ֗יִךְ שְׁבִי֙ עַד־גָּמְלֵ֣ךְ אֹת֔וֹ אַ֛ךְ יָקֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־דְּבָר֑וֹ וַתֵּ֤שֶׁב הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַתֵּ֣ינֶק אֶת־בְּנָ֔הּ עַד־גָּמְלָ֖הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

(כד) וַתַּעֲלֵ֨הוּ עִמָּ֜הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר גְּמָלַ֗תּוּ בְּפָרִ֤ים שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ וְאֵיפָ֨ה אַחַ֥ת קֶ֙מַח֙ וְנֵ֣בֶל יַ֔יִן וַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּ בֵית־יְהוָ֖ה שִׁל֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֖עַר נָֽעַר׃ (כה) וַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּ אֶת־הַפָּ֑ר וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־הַנַּ֖עַר אֶל־עֵלִֽי׃ (כו) וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י חֵ֥י נַפְשְׁךָ֖ אֲדֹנִ֑י אֲנִ֣י הָאִשָּׁ֗ה הַנִּצֶּ֤בֶת עִמְּכָה֙ בָּזֶ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃ (כז) אֶל־הַנַּ֥עַר הַזֶּ֖ה הִתְפַּלָּ֑לְתִּי וַיִּתֵּ֨ן יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ אֶת־שְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתִּי מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃ (כח) וְגַ֣ם אָנֹכִ֗י הִשְׁאִלְתִּ֙הוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה כָּל־הַיָּמִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֔ה ה֥וּא שָׁא֖וּל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ שָׁ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃ (פ)

1There was a man from Ramathaim of the Zuphites, in the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tohu son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2He had two wives, one named Hannah and the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless. 3This man used to go up from his town every year to worship and to offer sacrifice to the Lord of Hosts at Shiloh.—Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord there.

4One such day, Elkanah offered a sacrifice. He used to give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5but to Hannah he would give one portion only—though Hannah was his favorite—for the Lord had closed her womb. 6Moreover, her rival, to make her miserable, would taunt her that the Lord had closed her womb. 7This happened year after year: Every time she went up to the House of the Lord, the other would taunt her, so that she wept and would not eat. 8Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why are you crying and why aren’t you eating? Why are you so sad? Am I not more devoted to you than ten sons?”

9After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose.—The priest Eli was sitting on the seat near the doorpost of the temple of the Lord.— 10In her wretchedness, she prayed to the Lord, weeping all the while. 11And she made this vow: “O Lord of Hosts, if You will look upon the suffering of Your maidservant and will remember me and not forget Your maidservant, and if You will grant Your maidservant a male child, I will dedicate him to the Lord for all the days of his life; and no razor shall ever touch his head.”

12As she kept on praying before the Lord, Eli watched her mouth. 13Now Hannah was praying in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice could not be heard. So Eli thought she was drunk. 14Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Sober up!” 15And Hannah replied, “Oh no, my lord! I am a very unhappy woman. I have drunk no wine or other strong drink, but I have been pouring out my heart to the Lord. 16Do not take your maidservant for a worthless woman; I have only been speaking all this time out of my great anguish and distress.” 17“Then go in peace,” said Eli, “and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.” 18She answered, “You are most kind to your handmaid.” So the woman left, and she ate, and was no longer downcast. 19Early next morning they bowed low before the Lord, and they went back home to Ramah.
Elkanah knew his wife Hannah and the Lord remembered her. 20Hannah conceived, and at the turn of the year bore a son. She named him Samuel, meaning, “I asked the Lord for him.” 21And when the man Elkanah and all his household were going up to offer to the Lord the annual sacrifice and his votive sacrifice, 22Hannah did not go up. She said to her husband, “When the child is weaned, I will bring him. For when he has appeared before the Lord, he must remain there for good.” 23Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Do as you think best. Stay home until you have weaned him. May the Lord fulfill His word.” So the woman stayed home and nursed her son until she weaned him.

24When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a jar of wine. And though the boy was still very young, she brought him to the House of the Lord at Shiloh.25After slaughtering the bull, they brought the boy to Eli. 26She said, “Please, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you and prayed to the Lord. 27It was this boy I prayed for; and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him. 28I, in turn, hereby lend him to the Lord. For as long as he lives he is lent to the Lord.” And they bowed low there before the Lord.

עָלַ֤ץ לִבִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה

רָ֥מָה קַרְנִ֖י בַּֽיהוָ֑ה

רָ֤חַב פִּי֙ עַל־א֣וֹיְבַ֔י

כִּ֥י שָׂמַ֖חְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃

(ב) אֵין־קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה

כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ

וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃

(ג) אַל־תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה

גְבֹהָ֔ה יֵצֵ֥א עָתָ֖ק מִפִּיכֶ֑ם

(ה) שְׂבֵעִ֤ים בַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ

וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ

עַד־עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה

וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה׃

(ו) יְהוָ֖ה מֵמִ֣ית וּמְחַיֶּ֑ה

מוֹרִ֥יד שְׁא֖וֹל וַיָּֽעַל׃

מַשְׁפִּ֖יל אַף־מְרוֹמֵֽם׃

לְהוֹשִׁיב֙ עִם־נְדִיבִ֔ים

(ט) רַגְלֵ֤י חסידו [חֲסִידָיו֙] יִשְׁמֹ֔ר

וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יִדָּ֑מּוּ

כִּֽי־לֹ֥א בְכֹ֖חַ יִגְבַּר־אִֽישׁ׃

(י) יְהוָ֞ה יֵחַ֣תּוּ מריבו [מְרִיבָ֗יו]

עלו [עָלָיו֙] בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם יַרְעֵ֔ם

יְהוָ֖ה יָדִ֣ין אַפְסֵי־אָ֑רֶץ

וְיִתֶּן־עֹ֣ז לְמַלְכּ֔וֹ

וְיָרֵ֖ם קֶ֥רֶן מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃ (פ)

(יא) וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ אֶלְקָנָ֛ה הָרָמָ֖תָה עַל־בֵּית֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֗עַר הָיָ֤ה מְשָׁרֵת֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־פְּנֵ֖י עֵלִ֥י הַכֹּהֵֽן׃

1And Hannah prayed:

My heart exults in the Lord;
I have triumphed through the Lord.
I gloat over my enemies;
I rejoice in Your deliverance.

2There is no holy one like the Lord,
Truly, there is none beside You;
There is no rock like our God.

3Talk no more with lofty pride,
Let no arrogance cross your lips!
For the Lord is an all-knowing God;
By Him actions are measured.

4The bows of the mighty are broken,
And the faltering are girded with strength.

5Men once sated must hire out for bread;
Men once hungry hunger no more.
While the barren woman bears seven,
The mother of many is forlorn.

6The Lord deals death and gives life,
Casts down into Sheol and raises up.

7The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
He casts down, He also lifts high.

8He raises the poor from the dust,
Lifts up the needy from the dunghill,
Setting them with nobles,
Granting them seats of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s;
He has set the world upon them.

9He guards the steps of His faithful,
But the wicked perish in darkness—
For not by strength shall man prevail.

10The foes of the Lord shall be shattered;
He will thunder against them in the heavens.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
He will give power to His king,
And triumph to His anointed one.

11Then Elkanah [and Hannah] went home to Ramah; and the boy entered the service of the Lord under the priest Eli.

(ב) השאלות: מה פירוש אפים, שלרד''ק שפירש מענין כעס למה תפש הכעס בלשון רבים ומדוע אמר שתי פעמים סגר ה' בעד רחמה, וה' סגר רחמה, וכפל הלשון וכעסתה, גם כעס, הרעימה, שכולו ענין כעס. ומדוע לא הכעיסה אותה פנינה ולא בכתה רק בעלותם לבית ה' לא בשאר ימים. ואם תמיד היה אלקנה אומר לה למה תבכי והיא לא השיבה לו מאומה למה ספר זאת? :

verses 5-8

Questions: What is the meaning of "apayim", that the Radak understood to be related to anger; why was anger conveyed in the plural (dual) form, and for what reason does it say two times: "that HaShem had closed her womb," and "for HaShem had closed her womb." And it repeats: "taunts her" and "makes her miserable" - which are both related to anger. And why was it that Peninah didn't anger her, and she didn't cry, except when they went up to the house of HaShem, and not the rest of the time? And if Elkanah always would say to her why do you cry, and she wouldn't answer him, why tell of it?

(יג) וְקִרְע֤וּ לְבַבְכֶם֙

וְאַל־בִּגְדֵיכֶ֔ם

וְשׁ֖וּבוּ אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם

כִּֽי־חַנּ֤וּן וְרַחוּם֙ ה֔וּא

אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֙יִם֙ וְרַב־חֶ֔סֶד

וְנִחָ֖ם עַל־הָרָעָֽה׃

13Rend your hearts
Rather than your garments,
And turn back to the Lord your God.
For He is gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger, abounding in kindness,
And renouncing punishment.

(ג) ולחנה יתן מנה אחת אפים פי' הרד''ק בשם אביו, שרצה לומר שמנה זו היה נותן בעצב וחרון אף, שהראה את עצמו מתעצב ופניו זועפים על שאינו יכול לתת לה יותר, ונראה שרצה לומר מנה זו היתה מעוררת אפים, חרונות וכעסים הרבה, אם מצד אלקנה שהיה מתעצב בכפלים, א. על שה' סגר רחמה, ב. נוסף לזה שהיה מצטער בזה יען

But to Hannah he would give manah achat apayim According to the Radak, in the name of his father, the text means to say that Elkanah gave this portion in sorrow and anger, that he showed himself to be sad and irate that he could not give her more, and it seems that the text means that this portion would arouse fury, wrath, and much anger, if from Elkanah's perspective, who was twice sorrowful: 1) that HaShem closed her womb, and 2) and furthermore that this made him sorrowful.

Questions: Why did she not rise up until this point to pray, only now this first time, and why after the meal, and not before eating?

ותקם הנה עד עתה סמכה את עצמה על תפלת בעלה שהיה צדיק, ועתה שראתה שהוא מתיאש מן הרחמים התעוררה להתפלל בעצמה, ותקם

She rose Until now she supported herself (relied) on her husband who was a tzaddik (righteous one), and now that she saw that he was despairing of mercy, she aroused herself to pray on her own; she rose

בעבור הרעימה . שתתאונן , ורבותינו אמרו ( בבא בתרא טז א ) : בעבור הרעימה , שתתפלל , ולשם שמים נתכוונה

To make her miserable. To make her complain, and our sages said (Bava Batra 15:1): In order to anger (upset) her, that she would pray; meaning for the sake of heaven.

מנה אחת אפים . ( תרגום : ) חולק חד בחיר , הראוי להתקבל בסבר פנים יפות :

Manah achat apayim. (Translation:) Alots her a choice portion, suitable to be received warmly.

אמר ר' נחמן בר אבא:
הייתה פנינה משכמת ואומרת לחנה: אין את עומדת ומרחצת פניהם של בניך כדי שילכו לבית הספר?!
ובשש שעות הייתה אומרת לה: חנה אין את עומדת ומקבלת בניך שבאו מבית הספר?!

ר' תנחום בר אבא אמר:

Another interpretation: The nicest of the portions.

Moreover, her rival, to make her miserable, would taunt her

Repeatedly would anger her. What would she say to her? “Did you buy a sweater for your eldest son?,” “Did you buy a shirt for your second son?”

Said R' Nahman Bar Abba:

Peninah would rise early in the morning and say to Hannah: Aren't you preparing to wash the faces of your children so they can go to school?! And at mid day, she would say to her: Hannah, aren't you readying to welcome your children coming home from school?!

Said R' Tanhum Bar Abba:

They would sit to eat and Elkanah would give each one of his children his portion, and Peninah, intending to anger Hannah, would say to Elkanah: Give this my child his portion, and this my child his portion, and this one you haven't given a portion.

Due to her infertility Hannah was greatly distressed and was unable to eat when the family traveled to Shiloh to make sacrifices. Barren women were in a precarious economic position since the husband could legally divorce her for not producing an heir (Amit, p.75). Elkanah tried to comfort her by telling her that she would always be provided for. In addition, he asked her, “Am I not more devoted to you than ten sons?” (v.8) Now there is a great deal of debate about whether Elkanah was a complete dolt or a nice guy. Those who find him obnoxious see Elkanah as caring more for his own image by rephrasing her suffering into something about himself. Fewell, Klein and Fuchs offer scathing assessments of his character.

However, I find Aschkenasy’s assessment more convincing:

“Elkanah could have said: ‘Do not worry, Hannah, you are as good to me as ten sons.’ In other words, starting with the premise of the woman’s role as the provider of sons to the male, he could have juxtaposed the ten sons, the contribution that Hannah has failed to make… Instead, Elkanah’s attitude is surprisingly modern; he views himself not as a patriarch who has magnanimously forgiven his wife for not having done her duty to his family, but as the loving partner whose duty it is to make his wife happy… He does not define his relationship with his wife in terms of her familial or sexual duties, in terms of what she has or has not given him, but in terms of his contribution to her contentment: ‘am I not better to thee than ten sons'” (Woman, pp.136-7).

Indeed, Aschkenasy sees Elkanah as a proto-feminist for his enlightened manner. This view seems to be confirmed later when he says, “Do what you like, only– may YHWH establish his word” (v.23). The Greek Septuagint translates the phrase as ‘May YHWH establish what comes from your [that is, Hannah’s] mouth.” In other words, Elkanah not only acknowledged that Hannah was in firm control of events but encouraged her as well.

ולחנה יתן מנה אחת = לחנה הוא הגיש את המנה האחת שלה באופן אישי. בנוסף לכך -

Apayim = face; But to Hannah he would give manah achat apayim = Elkana gave Hannah, along with her portion, his "face", that is to say, he sat across from her, face to face and ate with her.
