And so too wrote the Halakhot Gedolot that the acceptance of Shabbat is dependent upon the lighting of the candle, for once he has lit the Shabbat candle Shabbat has begun for him. And for this reason he wrote that one must first light the Hannukah lamp before the Shabbat candle for if he does Shabbat first, he cannot afterwards light the Hannukah candle. But the Tosafot wrote that [the beginning of Shabbat] is not dependent on the lighting of the lamp for even after he lights, Shabbat has not begun for him. Rather it is dependent on the maariv prayer, for Shabbat begins once he has prayed maariv.

Rava said: It is obvious to me that there is a fixed list of priorities. When a person is poor and must choose between purchasing oil to light a Shabbat lamp for his home or purchasing oil to light a Hanukkah lamp, the Shabbat lamp for his home takes precedence. That is due to peace in his home;

Peace in his home--as it says below, "My soul is removed from peace" (Lamentations 3:17)---this refers to the lighting of a lamp on Shabbat, because the people of the house would be sorry to be sitting in the dark

"The lighting of the Shabbat Candles"--that he did not have from what to light them. And where there is no candle, there is no peace, as he is walking and stumbling while walking in darkness

(3) God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. (4) God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. (5) God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, a first day.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, "The Sabbath," page 66
Just as creation began with the word, "Let there be light!" so does the celebration of creation begin with the kindling of lights.

The Sages taught in a baraita: They sound six blasts on Shabbat eve to announce that Shabbat is approaching. The Gemara details what each blast signifies. The first blast is in order to stop the people from work in the fields. The second blast is to stop those who are working in the city, and to inform the proprietors to close the stores. The third is to inform them to light the Shabbat light; that is the statement of Rabbi Natan. Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi says: The third blast is to inform those who don phylacteries throughout the day to remove their phylacteries, as one does not don phylacteries on Shabbat. And he pauses after the third blast for the length of time it takes to fry a small fish or to stick bread to the sides of the oven. One who forgot to do so and needs those foods for Shabbat may do so then. And he sounds a tekia, and sounds a terua, and sounds a tekia, and he accepts Shabbat. It is then that Shabbat begins in every sense.

Rabbi Ḥanina would wrap himself in his garment and stand at nightfall on Shabbat eve, and say: Come and we will go out to greet Shabbat the queen. Rabbi Yannai put on his garment on Shabbat eve and said: Enter, O bride. Enter, O bride.

Genesis Rabbah 11:8

Rebbe Shimon the son of Yochai taught: Shabbat said to God, “Master of the Universe, everyone else has a partner and I do not!” God replied, “The People of Israel are your partner.” That is why when the People of Israel stood at Mt. Sinai, God said to them, “Remember what I told the Shabbat that the Jews are her Partner.” Therefore it says “Remember the Shabbat to sanctify it.”

Midrash Tehillim

Rabbi Levi said, “When the first man transgressed the commandment of the Kadosh Baruch Hu (Holy One Blessed Be He), He sat in judgment to punish him. What was the outcome? You find that on Erev Shabbat, man was created: In the first hour he was conceived in thought, in the second hour He consulted with the angels, in the third hour He gathered his dust, in the fourth hour He kneaded the dust, in the fifth hour He made him into a form, in the sixth hour He put the flesh on him, in the seventh hour He breathed into him a soul, in the eighth hour He stood him on his legs, in the ninth hour He commanded him, in the tenth hour he sinned, in the eleventh hour he was judged, in the twelfth hour he was thrown out. God came to sentence him but Shabbat arrived and [God] expelled Adam from there… Yom Shabbat came and became his defense attorney, saying before the Kadosh Baruch Hu, “Master of the universe, in the six days of creation, no one suffered punishment at all, and you begin with me? Is this my holiness? Is this my rest? And for the sake of Shabbat, Adam was saved from Gehinnom. When Adam saw the power of Shabbat, he was about to sing a hymn to Shabbat but Shabbat said to him, “To me you sing a hymn? Let’s you and I sing a hymn to the Kadosh Baruch Hu, let it be ‘It is good to give thanks to Hashem.’

(1) Come, let us sing joyously to the LORD, raise a shout for our rock and deliverer; (2) let us come into His presence with praise; let us raise a shout for Him in song! (3) For the LORD is a great God, the great king of all divine beings. (4) In His hand are the depths of the earth; the peaks of the mountains are His. (5) His is the sea, He made it; and the land, which His hands fashioned. (6) Come, let us bow down and kneel, bend the knee before the LORD our maker, (7) for He is our God, and we are the people He tends, the flock in His care. O, if you would but heed His charge this day: (8) Do not be stubborn as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah, in the wilderness, (9) when your fathers put Me to the test, tried Me, though they had seen My deeds. (10) Forty years I was provoked by that generation; I thought, “They are a senseless people; they would not know My ways.” (11) Concerning them I swore in anger, “They shall never come to My resting-place!”

(4) The voice of the LORD is power; the voice of the LORD is majesty; (5) the voice of the LORD breaks cedars; the LORD shatters the cedars of Lebanon. (6) He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion, like a young wild ox. (7) The voice of the LORD kindles flames of fire; (8) the voice of the LORD convulses the wilderness; the LORD convulses the wilderness of Kadesh; (9) the voice of the LORD causes hinds to calve, and strips forests bare; while in His temple all say “Glory!” (10) The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood; the LORD sits enthroned, king forever. (11) May the LORD grant strength to His people; may the LORD bestow on His people wellbeing.

(1) Come, lover, to welcome the bride

The face of Shabbat we will receive

"Keep" and "remember" in one saying

We were caused to listen by the Unified God

Adonai is One, and His Name is One

To His name, and to glory and to praise!

To greet the Sabbath, come and we'll go

For she is a font of blessing

From the first, from of old, she was chosen

Made at the end, and planned from the start

O Holy Place of the King, city of sovereignty

Arise, escape from the midst of the chaos Long have you sat in the valley of tears And He will grant mercy, mercy upon you

Shake it off, from the ashes get up!

Put on the clothes of your glory, my people!

By the hand of the son of Jesse the Bethlehemite

Nearer to my soul is its redemption!

Awaken yourselves! Awaken yourselves!

For your light has come! Get up, my light!

Wake up! Wake up! A song, speak out!

The glory of Adonai upon you is revealed!

Don't be ashamed! Don't be abashed!

Why be depressed? Why be upset?

In you my poor people will be sheltered And she shall be rebuilt - the city on her hill!

And attacked shall be those who attack you And far distant will be those who devoured you.

For you your God will rejoice

As a groom rejoices for his bride

Right and left you will break out

And Adonai you will venerate

By the hand of the man of the line of Peretz

We will rejoice and we will sing

Come in peace, crown of her husband

As well in joy and in jubilation

The midst of the faithful precious nation

Enter, bride! Enter, bride!

(1) A psalm. A song; for the sabbath day. (2) It is good to praise the LORD, to sing hymns to Your name, O Most High, (3) To proclaim Your steadfast love at daybreak, Your faithfulness each night (4) With a ten-stringed harp, with voice and lyre together. (5) You have gladdened me by Your deeds, O LORD; I shout for joy at Your handiwork. (6) How great are Your works, O LORD, how very subtle Your designs! (7) A brutish man cannot know, a fool cannot understand this: (8) though the wicked sprout like grass, though all evildoers blossom, it is only that they may be destroyed forever. (9) But You are exalted, O LORD, for all time. (10) Surely, Your enemies, O LORD, surely, Your enemies perish; all evildoers are scattered. (11) You raise my horn high like that of a wild ox; I am soaked in freshening oil. (12) I shall see the defeat of my watchful foes, hear of the downfall of the wicked who beset me. (13) The righteous bloom like a date-palm; they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon; (14) planted in the house of the LORD, they flourish in the courts of our God. (15) In old age they still produce fruit; they are full of sap and freshness, (16) attesting that the LORD is upright, my rock, in whom there is no wrong.

(1) The LORD is king, He is robed in grandeur; the LORD is robed, He is girded with strength. The world stands firm; it cannot be shaken. (2) Your throne stands firm from of old; from eternity You have existed. (3) The ocean sounds, O LORD, the ocean sounds its thunder, the ocean sounds its pounding. (4) Above the thunder of the mighty waters, more majestic than the breakers of the sea is the LORD, majestic on high. (5) Your decrees are indeed enduring; holiness befits Your house, O LORD, for all times.
