(1) On the evening of the fourteenth [of Nissan] we check for leavened bread by the light of a candle. Any place which we do not bring leavened bread into does not require checking. And why did [the sages] say [that we must check up to] two rows in the wine cellar? [It is] a place which we bring leavened bread into. The House of Shammai say: Two rows upon the entire wine-cellar. The House of Hillel say: The two outer rows, which are the uppermost.
(2) We do not need to be concerned [that] perhaps a weasel dragged [chamets] from [one] house to [another] house, or from [one] place to [another] place. Since if [we were to be concerned, we would also need to be concerned that chamets was dragged] from [one] courtyard to [another] courtyard, and from [one] city to [another] city — there [would be] no end to the matter.
May it be Your will, Lord our God,
that You station us in a lighted corner and not in a darkened corner,
and do not let our hearts become faint nor our eyes dim.
Some say that this was the prayer that Rav Hamnuna would recite, and that after Rabbi Alexandri prayed, he would say the following:
Master of the Universe, it is revealed and known before You
that our will is to perform Your will, and what prevents us?
On the one hand, the yeast in the dough, the evil inclination that is within every person;
and the subjugation to the kingdoms on the other.
May it be Your will
that You will deliver us from their hands, of both the evil inclination and the foreign kingdoms,
so that we may return to perform the edicts of Your will with a perfect heart.
R. Shalom Noach Berezovsky (Belarus, August 8, 1911 – Israel, August 8, 2000 - aka Slonimer Rebbe)
And just as in the Exodus from Egypt, when the festival of Pesach was made holy to the people of Israel, which was when our becoming a chosen people to the Holy One was renewed, then we became Yehudim (Jewish) - before that it is needed at the night of the 14th to search for chametz, that is, the evil parts that are inside one/it, and to destroy the chametz so as being Jewish becomes possible, this applies both to the chametz that is revealed in transgression and the chametz that is hidden inside itself/oneself even if it/one did not transgress in actuality, [that chametz is] the root sprouting poison weed and wormwood, hidden deep inside, in the crroks and cranies, that [chametz] one needs to check and search and burn so as to enter the festival of Pesach as a complete Jew.
Sefer Netivot Shalom vol. 2, p. 247-248
And one checks by the light of a candle - this is understood through what's written "the light of God is the soul of a person", and is as is found in the book Avodat Israel, that ner (candle) is the acronym for "neshamah, ruach" (soul, spirit), which is what the Beit Avraham (Avraham Weinberg of Slonim, whose memory will defend us) writes: "the soul of a person teaches her." [Which means] That since one does not [necessarily] know what is one's evil part, because that part is hidden and concealed, then if one searches and checks for one's central evil point, up to the point one's hand reaches, then the end will be that one will find it, through the force "the soul of a person teaches her," the soul of a Jewish person illuminates that person and directs that person to know one's central point.
And in the Siddur of Rabbi Yaakov Kopil (Lifshitz) it is stated that the light of a candle is understood through the verse "because the mitzvah is a candle and the Torah is a light", that through the force of Torah and Mitzvot we search for the chametz, and this is an advice to know what is the evil hidden inside us, and it is understood by the holy Zohar (vol. 3:23) on the verse "or his transgression is made known to him": "who made it known to him? Torah made it known to him," that is, because of his learning of Torah, the strength of Torah makes it known to him that he did not behave appropriately. And this is the explanation of "by the light of a candle", Torah's light and mitvah's candle; that is the strength of Torah and mitzvot illuminate for a Jewish person to know where is the chametz inside one, so as one can destroy it, whether it is chametz that is seen to the eye or chametz that is not seen, not known at all.
And therefore, chametz is forbidden in any amount, because it is like the rotting that spreads, God help us, in the soul of a person - there is no real difference in the amount of rot, since it continues to spread and rot continuously, since the chametz is the root of evil, that sprouts poison weed and wormwood, and therefore there is no minimum, it is forbidden in any amount.

(17) Perchance there is among you some man or woman, or some clan or tribe, whose heart is even now turning away from the Ad-nai our God to go and worship the gods of those nations—perchance there is among you a root sprouting poison weed and wormwood.
