עָנִי שֶׁהוּא קְרוֹבוֹ קֹדֶם לְכָל אָדָם. עֲנִיֵּי בֵּיתוֹ קוֹדְמִין לַעֲנִיֵּי עִירוֹ. עֲנִיֵּי עִירוֹ קוֹדְמִין לַעֲנִיֵּי עִיר אַחֶרֶת. שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (דברים טו יא) "לְאָחִיךָ לַעֲנִיֶּךָ וּלְאֶבְיֹנְךָ בְּאַרְצֶךָ":

A poor person who is a relative takes precedence over anyone else. The poor of one's household take precedence over the poor of one's city. The poor of one's city take precedence over the poor of another city, as it is said, (Deut. 15:11) Open your hand to the poor and needy kinsman in your land.

תָּנֵי חֲבוּרָה וּמִשְׁפָּחָה כָּךְ הֵן דּוֹמִים לְכִפַּת אֲבָנִים, אַתְּ נוֹטֵל מִמֶּנָּהּ אֶבֶן אַחַת וְכוּלָּהּ מִתְרוֹעֲעַת

A company and family are similar to a heap of stones: If you remove one stone, the whole becomes loose.

זאת המידה תשמרה ותחזקה זאת התורה הישרה מאד - רצוני לומר נשיאת פני הקרובים והיטב להם... וה'חכמים ז"ל' משבחים מאד מדת האדם שיהיה 'מקרב את קרוביו... והיא אחת מכוונות התורה הגדולות...

The Torah greatly encourages showing closeness and kindness to one's family members...The Sages strongly praise one who 'shows closeness to his relatives'...This [strengthening of family ties] is one of the most important objectives of the Torah...

איש אמו ואביו תיראו להורות שלא יהיה הכבוד בהם על אופן שיהיה לבו גס בהם אף על פי שיכבדם במאכל ובמשתה ובמלבוש כמו שהזכירו ז''ל (פרק קמא דקדושין) באמרם יש מאכיל לאביו פסיוני וטורדו מן העולם אבל יהיה כבודו להם כמכבד נוראים אצלו למעלתם עליו. ואחר כך ביאר ענין שבת באמרו:

The Torah now begins to explain in detail the commandment to honour father and mother, by writing that everyone is to relate with reverence to his mother and father respectively. These words teach that in addition to providing for aged and economically unstable parents with food, drink and clothing, the children (adults by then) must not look down on their parents who in the meantime have become economically dependent on their children. Our sages spelled this out in Kidushin 31 where they said: “sometimes someone feeds his father the most delicious and expensive dishes while the manner in which he does this contributes to the son’s losing his share in the hereafter, whereas on the other hand, a son could earn his share in the hereafter even by expecting his father to perform physically hard labour.” In the latter case, the son explains to the father lovingly why he cannot offer him luxuries but he treats him with love and concern and listens to his father’s words of advice.

וטעם ויצא אל אחיו כי הגידו לו אשר הוא יהודי, והיה חפץ לראותם בעבור שהם אחיו. והנה נסתכל בסבלותם ועמלם ולא יכול לסבול ולכן הרג המצרי המכה הנלחץ:

The reason that he went out to his brothers is that they told him that he was a Jew and he wished to see them -- as they were his brothers. And behold, he saw their suffering and hard work and could not stand it and therefore he killed the Egyptian who was hitting the oppressed [Jew].
