Whole-hearted

(9) ... Noah was in his generations a man righteous and wholehearted; Noah walked with God.

(1) ...the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him: ‘I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be thou wholehearted.

AND BE PERFECT — This, too, is a command following upon the previous command: be whole-hearted in all the trials I impose upon you. According to the Midrash (ib.), however, it means: walk before Me by observing the precept of circumcision and through this you will become perfect, for so long as you are uncircumcised I regard you as having a blemish. Another explanation of היה תמים BE THOU PERFECT — at present you lack the power of controlling morally five organs, viz., two eyes, two ears and the membrum. Therefore will I add a letter (i. e. the letter 'ה the numerical value of which is five) to your name (אברם which equals 243) so that the total of the letters of your name (אברהם) will become 248, corresponding to the number of limbs of your body (cf. Nedarim 32b).

(13) Thou shalt be whole-hearted with the LORD thy God.

Whole-hearted: The letter 'Tav' is large, indicating that if you go whole-heartedly, it is as if you have fulfilled from 'Aleph' to 'Tav' ("from A to Z").

"Be pure with the LORD your God." Walk with God in purity and look only to him. Do not look to future events; rather, accept with equanimity whatever God brings you - in order to be "with" God and with God's portion.

תמים תהיה, whole-hearted to the extent that you will not even try and gain information

about future events except through an authentic prophet.

(21) For the upright shall dwell in the land, And the whole-hearted shall remain in it.
(10) Whoso causeth the upright to go astray in an evil way, He shall fall himself into his own pit; But the whole-hearted shall inherit good.

תמים

1. whole, entire, 2. intact, 3 unobjectionable, free of blemish, 4. blameless, 5. sincerely, honestly; 6. one perfect in knowledge

"unblemished. .... Now all the people of Israel are recipients of the third covenant, and so all of them are instructed to be like Noah and Abraham. They may receive the covenant initially on the merit of Abraham, but they must maintain it on their own integrity." -- Richard Elliott Friedman's Commentary on the Torah

"You should know that the precepts of the heart imply a complete harmony between our inner and outward actions, as regards the service of the Lord, till the heart and tongue and other limbs will be at one with each other, each one justifying and bearing witness in favour of the other, neither contradicting nor belying each other." --Bahya Ibn Paquda, Hovot Ha-levavot (Duties of the Heart)
