On a Woodchopper's Chaistic Limb
(ט) אַתֶּ֨ם נִצָּבִ֤ים הַיּוֹם֙ כֻּלְּכֶ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם רָאשֵׁיכֶ֣ם שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֗ם זִקְנֵיכֶם֙ וְשֹׁ֣טְרֵיכֶ֔ם כֹּ֖ל אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
(9) You stand this day, all of you, before the LORD your God—your tribal heads, your elders and your officials, all the men of Israel,
(י) טַפְּכֶ֣ם נְשֵׁיכֶ֔ם וְגֵ֣רְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּקֶ֣רֶב מַחֲנֶ֑יךָ מֵחֹטֵ֣ב עֵצֶ֔יךָ עַ֖ד שֹׁאֵ֥ב מֵימֶֽיךָ׃

(10) your children, your wives, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to water drawer

Does woodchopper to water drawer represent a merism like moist and dry or heaven and earth? Both are among the hardest working men (woodchoppers) and women (water drawers) of the community: the am ha'aretz, people of the earth.

Note: By the time of the Talmud am ha'aretz is a put-down: boorish, ignorant, uncivilized. The Shulchan Arukh claims they are not diligent with the mitzvot. (Ever HaEzer 2)

It does not seem to be an insult here in Deuteronomy, which I understand to be the recollection of what Moses said generations ago on the other side of the Jordan.

(יא) לְעָבְרְךָ֗ בִּבְרִ֛ית יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ וּבְאָלָת֑וֹ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ כֹּרֵ֥ת עִמְּךָ֖ הַיּֽוֹם׃

(11) to enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, which the LORD your God is concluding with you this day, with its sanctions;

(יב) לְמַ֣עַן הָקִֽים־אֹתְךָ֩ הַיּ֨וֹם ׀ ל֜וֹ לְעָ֗ם וְה֤וּא יִֽהְיֶה־לְּךָ֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּר־לָ֑ךְ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֤ר נִשְׁבַּע֙ לַאֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם לְיִצְחָ֖ק וּֽלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃
(12) to the end that He may establish you this day as His people and be your God, as He promised you and as He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
(יג) וְלֹ֥א אִתְּכֶ֖ם לְבַדְּכֶ֑ם אָנֹכִ֗י כֹּרֵת֙ אֶת־הַבְּרִ֣ית הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶת־הָאָלָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃
(13) I make this covenant, with its sanctions, not with you alone,
(יד) כִּי֩ אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֨ר יֶשְׁנ֜וֹ פֹּ֗ה עִמָּ֙נוּ֙ עֹמֵ֣ד הַיּ֔וֹם לִפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וְאֵ֨ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵינֶ֛נּוּ פֹּ֖ה עִמָּ֥נוּ הַיּֽוֹם׃

(14) but both with those who are standing here with us this day before the LORD our God and with those who are not with us here this day.

If the water drawer's job is to tend the newly planted saplings today, then there will be trees for the woodchopper in future generations. Then instead of a merism, this is a thematic chiasm.

Am I out on a limb with this explanation?

I understand this to say that the covenant is to extend from generation to generation and applies to everyone in the land including even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to water drawer.
