Shabbat: The Chosen People Choose Rest

The heaven and the earth were finished, and all their array. On the seventh day G-d finished the work that G-d had been doing, and G-d rested on the seventh day from all the work that G-d had done. And G-d blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because on it G-d rested from all the work of creation that G-d had done. Such is the story of heaven and earth when they were created.

[Regarding manna, the food G-d provided for the Israelites while they were wandering in the desert.] So they gathered it every morning, each as much as they needed to eat; for when the sun grew hot, it would melt. On the sixth day they gathered double the amount of food, two omers for each; and when all the chieftains of the community came and told Moses, he said to them, “This is what the L-rd meant: Tomorrow is a day of rest, a holy sabbath of the L-rd. Bake what you would bake and boil what you would boil; and all that is left put aside to be kept until morning.” So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered; and it did not turn foul, and there were no maggots in it. Then Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath of the L-rd; you will not find it today on the plain. Six days you shall gather it; on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none.” Yet some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found nothing. And the L-rd said to Moses, “How long will you people refuse to obey My commandments and My teachings? Mark that the L-rd has given you the sabbath; therefore G-d gives you two days’ food on the sixth day. Let everyone remain where they are: let no one leave their place on the seventh day.” So the people remained inactive on the seventh day.

If you refrain from trampling the sabbath,
From pursuing your affairs on My holy day;
If you call the sabbath “delight,”
The Lord’s holy day “honored”;
And if you honor it and go not your ways
Nor look to your affairs, nor strike bargains—

Then you can seek the favor of the Lord.
I will set you astride the heights of the earth,
And let you enjoy the heritage of your ancestor Jacob— For the mouth of the L-rd has spoken.

And G-d created humanity in G-d's image, in the image of G-d G-d created it; male and female G-d created them.
