(7) He was accustomed to say: The more flesh, the more worms. The more possessions, the more worry. The more wives, the more witchcraft. The more maidservants, the more lewdness. The more man-servants, the more theft. The more Torah, the more life. The more sitting [and studying], the more wisdom. The more counsel, the more understanding. The more charity, the more peace. One who has acquired a good name has acquired for himself. One who has acquired words of Torah has acquired for himself the life of the World to Come.
היה עומד בתפלה ויצא ממנו רוח מלמטה ממתין עד שיכלה הריח וחוזר ומתפלל:
There is a teaching : R. 'Akiba said : Once I went into a privy behind R. Joshua and learned from him three things. I learned that we should not "evacuate" East or West, but North or South. I learned that we should not expose ourselves standing but sitting. I also learned that we should not wipe ourselves with the right hand but with the left. Ben 'Azzai said to him, "Were you really so disrespectful with your master?" He replied, "It was a matter of Torah and I wished to learn."
Why should we not wipe with the right hand but only with the left? Raba said : Because the Torah was given with the right hand ; as it is said, "At His right hand was a fiery law unto them" (Deut. xxxiii. 2). Rabbah b. Bar Hannah said : Because it is near the mouths. R. Simeon b. Lakish said: Because he binds the Tefillin with it. Rab Nahman b. Isaac said: Because he points to the accents of the Torah with it.
Because fear of demons in bathrooms was pervasive, the Gemara relates: Abaye’s mother raised a lamb to accompany him to the bathroom. The Gemara objects: She should have raised a goat for him. The Gemara responds: A goat could be interchanged with a goat-demon. Since both the demon and the goat are called sa’ir, they were afraid to bring a goat to a place frequented by demons.
Before Raba was appointed Principal [of the Seminary], the daughter of Rab Hisda used to rattle a nut in a flask for him; but afterwards when he ruled [over the Seminary] she made an opening for him [in the wall] and placed her hand upon his head.
