Babylonian Talmud, Chagigah 2b
תלמוד בבלי מסכת חגיגה דף ב עמוד ב
לא תהו בראה לשבת יצרה", אלא מפני תיקון העולם"
"He did not create it a waste land, he formed it to be inhabited", specifically for tikkun olam (repairing the world). [translation by Rabbi Daniel Brown]

Suggested Discussion Questions:

1. Imagine: what do you think the world first looked like when G-d created it?

2. What does the world look like today? How is it similar to the world you imagined previously? How is it different? Why?

3. What can we do to make our world today look as beautiful as it did right after creation? How can we keep our world from becoming, as the Talmud puts it, a “Waste land?”
