חלכה א ביור חלכה, אורח חיים סימן תקכט
ואל יצמצם בהוצאת יו"ט - אבל בשאר הימים צריך כל אדם לצמצם בהוצאותיו.. וזהו תוכחת מרובה על זמנינו שבעו"ה הרבה אנשים עוברין ע"ז ולא ישימו לב איך להתנהג בהוצאות ביתם להרחיק דברים המותרים ורבים חללים הפילה הנהגה הרעה הזו שמביאה את האדם לבסוף עי"ז לידי גזל וחמס וגם לחרפה וכלמה
Original statement from the Shulchan Aruch: “A person should not be stingy when it comes to the expenses for holidays.” Commentary from the Bi’ur Halacha: On weekdays, however, people are obligated to limit their expenditures... in our days… many people…. violate this guideline, and are not careful about how they act regarding expenditures of their households. They do not avoid luxuries and this has caused many to fall, since this bad practice leads in the end to robbery and violence, embarrassment and shame…
