Mishna, Baba Batra 9:1
If a man dies and is survived by sons and daughters, if his estate is plentiful, the sons inherit and the daughters are supported by the estate. If the resources of the estate are limited, the daughters are supported and the sons beg for alms. Admon said, "Because I am male I should lose out?" Rabban Gamliel said, "I see your point, Admon." Suggested Discussion Questions:

1. In what ways are daughters at an economic disadvantage? In what ways are sons at an economic disadvantage?

2. For what reasons does this text distinguish between sons and daughters? In what ways are these reasons still true today?
