GEMARA: The Sages taught (Tosefta 3:15): Samson rebelled with his eyes, as it is stated: “Then his father and his mother said to him: Is there never a woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you go out to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said to his father: Get her for me; for she is pleasant in my eyes” (Judges 14:3). Therefore, the Philistines gouged out his eyes, as it is stated: “And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes” (Judges 16:21). The Gemara asks: Is that so? But isn’t it written: “But his father and his mother knew not that it was from the Lord; as he sought a subterfuge against the Philistines” (Judges 14:4), indicating that Samson’s searching for a Philistine wife was due to a Divine mission? The Gemara answers: Although God did plan the punishment of the Philistines, in any event when he went, he followed his inclination and did not act for the sake of Heaven.

One should be shocked – how could someone regarding whom the Creator ordered that he would be holy from the womb then become tamei with Philistine girls? It appears that those women he took in Timnah, Azah and Nachal Sorek he converted and brought to the law of Israel. It would be a desecration for Israel’s judge and rescuer to marry Philistines, violating, “You shall not marry among them,” which is very strict and which brings a person to denial of the Creator, as it says, “For he will lead your sin away from Me,” and we do not find in the text that he was punished for this, and it does not say that he did that which was evil in Gd’s eyes, and the Creator made him succeed everywhere he turned. And so the text says, “For it was from Gd,” meaning taking a woman from the Philistines was from Gd, and Gd desired this, for certainly he converted them…

It appears to me that his initial intent was good, to seek a claim against the Philistines. Then desire overcame him, when he saw her and she was good in his eyes, and he lost his Divine intent due to his physical, animal intent which became mixed in. Therefore he was punished…

Abarbanel

We have seen many times in the stories of the prophets that they occasionally acted against the rules, so that the service of Gd would emerge from those deeds. Like Eliyahu on Mount Carmel, breaking the rules by bringing a korban on an [external] altar; this was a temporary ruling, to publicize in Israel that Hashem is Gd. And this is appropriate to say regarding Shimshon, that he broke the law so that he would find a claim for revenge against the Philistines – certainly given that he did not have the Divine spirit settled and orderly within him, to perform heroic deeds as the other judges did, and he did not have a complete mind. But Gd put him in place for justice, and the Rock established him to rebuke. And therefore [Gd] gave him a spirit of might and extraordinary strength, stirring him up occasionally. The result of this was that when he saw a woman who found favour in his eyes, there was no halting his spirit, and when he was outraged, nothing could stand before him. And it appears that in his innocence he thought that as a nazir he was obligated only in those things regarding which the malach had instructed… And in other matters, he followed his desire. Gd enabled him to do this, because even though those activities were in themselves mixed up, vengeance against the Philistines would emerge from them.

Abarbanel

To teach that Gd created a reason for Israel to take vengeance upon the Philistines – not by their own hand but by Shimshon’s hand – and that Shimshon would not act in Israelite areas but in Philistine areas even when taking revenge, so that the Philistines would not have a claim against Israel for this. It would be associated with Shimshon alone, and the Philistines would [also] refrain from battling Israel out of fear of Shimshon…

(5) If idolaters will demand one of a group of women, saying: "Yield us one of among you and we will defile her, if not we will defile you all", let all be defiled, rather than surrender to them one soul in Israel.4Terumot, 8.12. C. G. Likewise, if idolaters will say to a group of men: "Yield us one of you and we will kill him, if not we will kill you all", let all of them be killed rather than surrender to them one soul in Israel. If, however, they single out the one, saying: "Give us that man, if not we will kill you all", if he be guilty of a capital crime, as, for example, Sheba son of Bichri5See Second Samuel; 20. 1. G., they may surrender him to them, but it is not commendable to advise them to do so; if he be not guilty of a capital crime, they all must submit rather than surrender them one soul in Israel.

(1) דן ידין עמו means DAN WILL TAKE VENGEANCE FOR HIS PEOPLE from the Philistines, the phrase having the same meaning as in (Deuteronomy 32:30) “For the Lord will avenge (ידין) his people”. (2) כאחד שבטי ישראל means ALL THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL WILL BE AT ONE with him and he will take vengeance for all of them. This prophecy alludes to Samson (Genesis Rabbah 99:11). One might also explain כאחד שבטי ישראל thus: “[Dan will take vengeance for his people as did] the most distinguished tribe (המיוחד) among the tribes of Israel” — alluding to David who was of the tribe of Judah (Genesis Rabbah 99:11). (1) שפיפן is another name for a נחש. I am of opinion that it is thus called because it hisses (נושף) when biting. Similarly we have, (Genesis 3:15) “and thou shalt bite (תשיפנו) at their heel” (cf. Rashi thereon). (2) הנשך עקבי סוס THAT BITETH THE HORSE’S HEELS — this is the manner of the serpent. Scripture compares him to a serpent that bites the horse’s heels ויפל רכבו אחור THAT HIS RIDER FALLETH BACKWARD without it (the serpent) having touched him at all. We find the analogy to this in the case of Samson with reference to whom this prophecy was made (Judges 16:29): “And Samson look fast hold of the two middle pillars etc.” — and those on the roof died though not directly attacked. Onkelos translates נחש by כחיוי חורמן, like the serpent “Churman”, which is the name of a kind of serpent the bite of which is incurable. It is the serpent which in Hebrew is called צפעוני. It is called a חורמן because it destroys (חרם) everything. The word וכפיתנא in the Targum means “and like a פתן” (like an asp). יכמון in the Targum means יארוב “he lies in wait”. (1) 'לישועתך קויתי ה I HOPE FOR THY AID, O ETERNAL — He prophesied that the Philistines would put out his (Samson’s) eyes, and that he would have to say (Judges 16:28) “Remember me, I pray Thee, and strengthen me, I pray Thee, only this once etc.”

(14) the first standard to set out, troop by troop, was the division of Judah. In command of its troops was Nahshon son of Amminadab;

(25) Then, as the rear guard of all the divisions, the standard of the division of Dan would set out, troop by troop. In command of its troop was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;

(1) מאסף לכל המחנת [THEN THE BANNER OF THE CAMP OF THE CHILDREN OF DAN SET FORWARD] WHICH WAS THE GATHERER OF ALL THE CAMPS — The Talmud Yerushalmi Eruvin 5:1 has the following statement: Because the tribe of Dan consisted of numerous troops (i. e. was more numerous than each of the other tribes, except Judah which marched on the front, cf. Chapter II), it marched in the rear so that if anyone of the other tribes lost anything, he (Dan) restored it to him. (מאסף לכל המחנת therefore means “the one who gathered in everything belonging to all the camps”.) —
