(כב) וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה בְּנִ֥י בְכֹרִ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (כג) וָאֹמַ֣ר אֵלֶ֗יךָ שַׁלַּ֤ח אֶת־בְּנִי֙ וְיַֽעַבְדֵ֔נִי וַתְּמָאֵ֖ן לְשַׁלְּח֑וֹ הִנֵּה֙ אָנֹכִ֣י הֹרֵ֔ג אֶת־בִּנְךָ֖ בְּכֹרֶֽךָ׃
(22) Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the LORD: Israel is My first-born son. (23) I have said to you, “Let My son go, that he may worship Me,” yet you refuse to let him go. Now I will slay your first-born son.’”
(א) וְאַחַ֗ר בָּ֚אוּ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה
כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר ה' אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־עַמִּ֔י וְיָחֹ֥גּוּ לִ֖י בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃
(ב) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֔ה מִ֤י ה' אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶשְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹל֔וֹ לְשַׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹ֤א יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ אֶת־ה' וְגַ֥ם אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֥א אֲשַׁלֵּֽחַ׃
(ג) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֱלֹהֵ֥י הָעִבְרִ֖ים נִקְרָ֣א עָלֵ֑ינוּ נֵ֣לֲכָה נָּ֡א דֶּרֶךְ֩ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת יָמִ֜ים בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר וְנִזְבְּחָה֙ לַֽה' אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ פֶּ֨ן־יִפְגָּעֵ֔נוּ בַּדֶּ֖בֶר א֥וֹ בֶחָֽרֶב׃ (ד) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָ֚מָּה מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן תַּפְרִ֥יעוּ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם מִמַּֽעֲשָׂ֑יו לְכ֖וּ לְסִבְלֹתֵיכֶֽם׃
(1) And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh: ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Let My people go, that they may hold a feast unto Me in the wilderness.’ (2) And Pharaoh said: ‘Who is the LORD, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go.’ (3) And they said: ‘The God of the Hebrews hath met with us. Let us go, we pray thee, three days’journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest He fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.’ (4) And the king of Egypt said unto them: ‘Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, cause the people to break loose from their work? get you unto your burdens.’
(ג) מלת פן יפגענו. כוללת אנחנו ישראלים. גם אתה פרעה עמנו וכל המצריים. וכראות פרעה שבא הערוב ואכל מצריים רבים. כמו שכתוב ישלח בהם ערוב ויאכלם. אז אמר לכו זבחו לאלהיכם בארץ ומשה השיבו לא נכון לעשות כן בארץ רק דרך שלשת ימים במדבר ירחקו. וזה המרחק הוא בין מצרי' ובין הר סיני להולך בדרך ישר. ושם יזבחו ככתוב תעבדון את האלהים על ההר הזה. ועוד ויבן משה מזבח תחת ההר. גם המזבח שבנה בחלישת עמלק בהר סיני הוא... ובבא הארבה נתן רשות לקצת ישראל שילכו לזבוח. ובמכת חשך נתן רשות ללכת כולם רק המקנה שלהם לא ילך עמהם וכראותם שבא הדבר והנה הבכורים אז נתבררו להם דברי משה פן יפגענו בדבר. על כן אמרו כולנו מתים. וגרשו אותם המצרים ללכת לזבוח גם השאילום

(טז) וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הָעִבְרִים֙ שְׁלָחַ֤נִי אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר שַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־עַמִּ֔י וְיַֽעַבְדֻ֖נִי בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְהִנֵּ֥ה לֹא־שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ עַד־כֹּֽה׃
לפני צרדע:
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃
(ד) וַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֜ה לְמֹשֶׁ֣ה וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַעְתִּ֣ירוּ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וְיָסֵר֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִמֶּ֖נִּי וּמֵֽעַמִּ֑י וַאֲשַׁלְּחָה֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וְיִזְבְּח֖וּ לַיהוָֽה׃

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃
פרעה חושד
(כא) וַיִּקְרָ֣א פַרְעֹ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֑ן וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכ֛וּ זִבְח֥וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם בָּאָֽרֶץ׃(כב) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֗ה לֹ֤א נָכוֹן֙ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת כֵּ֔ן כִּ֚י תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת מִצְרַ֔יִם נִזְבַּ֖ח לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ הֵ֣ן נִזְבַּ֞ח אֶת־תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת מִצְרַ֛יִם לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א יִסְקְלֻֽנוּ׃ (כג) דֶּ֚רֶךְ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים נֵלֵ֖ךְ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְזָבַ֙חְנוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יֹאמַ֥ר אֵלֵֽינוּ׃ (כד) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֗ה אָנֹכִ֞י אֲשַׁלַּ֤ח אֶתְכֶם֙ וּזְבַחְתֶּ֞ם לַיהוָ֤ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר רַ֛ק הַרְחֵ֥ק לֹא־תַרְחִ֖יקוּ לָלֶ֑כֶת הַעְתִּ֖ירוּ בַּעֲדִֽי׃ (כה) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י יוֹצֵ֤א מֵֽעִמָּךְ֙ וְהַעְתַּרְתִּ֣י אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וְסָ֣ר הֶעָרֹ֗ב מִפַּרְעֹ֛ה מֵעֲבָדָ֥יו וּמֵעַמּ֖וֹ מָחָ֑ר רַ֗ק אַל־יֹסֵ֤ף פַּרְעֹה֙ הָתֵ֔ל לְבִלְתִּי֙ שַׁלַּ֣ח אֶת־הָעָ֔ם לִזְבֹּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָֽה׃
(21) Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go and sacrifice to your God within the land.”(22) But Moses replied, “It would not be right to do this, for what we sacrifice to the LORD our God is untouchable to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice that which is untouchable to the Egyptians before their very eyes, will they not stone us! (23) So we must go a distance of three days into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He may command us.” (24) Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; but do not go very far. Plead, then, for me.” (25) And Moses said, “When I leave your presence, I will plead with the LORD that the swarms of insects depart tomorrow from Pharaoh and his courtiers and his people; but let not Pharaoh again act deceitfully, not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.”
(ח) וַיּוּשַׁ֞ב אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאֶֽת־אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לְכ֥וּ עִבְד֖וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם מִ֥י וָמִ֖י הַהֹלְכִֽים׃ (ט) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֔ה בִּנְעָרֵ֥ינוּ וּבִזְקֵנֵ֖ינוּ נֵלֵ֑ךְ בְּבָנֵ֨ינוּ וּבִבְנוֹתֵ֜נוּ בְּצֹאנֵ֤נוּ וּבִבְקָרֵ֙נוּ֙ נֵלֵ֔ךְ כִּ֥י חַג־יְהוָ֖ה לָֽנוּ׃(י) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם יְהִ֨י כֵ֤ן יְהוָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְאֶֽת־טַפְּכֶ֑ם רְא֕וּ כִּ֥י רָעָ֖ה נֶ֥גֶד פְּנֵיכֶֽם׃(יא) לֹ֣א כֵ֗ן לְכֽוּ־נָ֤א הַגְּבָרִים֙ וְעִבְד֣וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אֹתָ֖הּ אַתֶּ֣ם מְבַקְשִׁ֑ים וַיְגָ֣רֶשׁ אֹתָ֔ם מֵאֵ֖ת פְּנֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה׃ (פ)
(8) So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh and he said to them, “Go, worship the LORD your God! Who are the ones to go?” (9) Moses replied, “We will all go, young and old: we will go with our sons and daughters, our flocks and herds; for we must observe the LORD’s festival.”(10) But he said to them, “The LORD be with you the same as I mean to let your children go with you! Clearly, you are bent on mischief.(11) No! You menfolk go and worship the LORD, since that is what you want.” And they were expelled from Pharaoh’s presence.
(ה) וַיֹּאמְרוּ עַבְדֵי פַרְעֹה וגו' וַיּוּשַׁב אֶת משֶׁה וְאֶת אַהֲרֹן וגו' וַיֹּאמֶר משֶׁה בִּנְעָרֵינוּ וּבִזְקֵנֵינוּ וגו' וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יְהִי כֵן ה' עִמָּכֶם וגו'. מַהוּ רָעָה נֶגֶד פְּנֵיכֶם, אָמַר לָהֶם דֶּרֶךְ הַבַּחוּרִים וְהַזְּקֵנִים לִזְבֹּחַ, שֶׁמָּא הַקְּטַנִּים וְהַטַּף, וּמִי שֶׁאוֹמֵר דָּבָר זֶה אֵין דַּעְתּוֹ אֶלָּא לִבְרֹחַ, לֹא כְּמָה שֶׁאַתֶּם אוֹמְרִים (שמות ה, ג, ח, כג): דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלשֶׁת יָמִים, לְפִיכָךְ רְאוּ שֶׁאוֹתָהּ שֶׁאַתֶּם מְחַשְׁבִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ בְּדַעְתְּכֶם לִבְרֹחַ הִיא תָּשׁוּב נֶגֶד פְּנֵיכֶם שֶׁלֹא תֵצְאוּ מִכָּאן, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב: לְכוּ נָא הַגְּבָרִים, אָמַר לוֹ אִם תֹּאמַר: לֹא כֵן מַחְשְׁבוֹתֵינוּ לִבְרוֹחַ, אִם כֵּן יֵאָמְנוּ דִבְרֵיכֶם, לְכוּ נָא הַגְּבָרִים, כִּי הַטַּף אֵינָן בְּנֵי עֲבוֹדָה לָמָּה אַתֶּם צְרִיכִין לָהֶם, אֶלָּא כִּי אֹתָהּ אַתֶּם מְבַקְּשִׁים, רָעָה אַתֶּם מְבַקְּשִׁים לַעֲשׂוֹת, לִבְרֹחַ אַתֶּם חֲפֵצִים, לְפִיכָךְ אֵינִי שׁוֹמֵעַ לָכֶם לִכְלוּם. מִיָּד צִוָּה וְגֵרַשׁ אוֹתָם מִשָּׁם, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב: וַיְּגָרֶשׁ אֹתָם מֵאֵת פְּנֵי פַרְעֹה.
And the servants of Pharaoh said etc... Moshe said with our youth and our elderly we will go etc... What does "evil is before your faces" mean? He [Pharaoh] said to them, it's the way of young men and the elderly to bring sacrifices, but not the minors and children, and anyone who says such a thing only intends to run away, unlike what you said: "Three days way." Therefore see that what you are intending to do in running away will be thrown in your face as you will not leave here, as it is written: Let the men go. He said to him if you say we aren't thinking of running away, if your words are to be believed, then let the men go, because the children are not participants in the service. Why do you need them? Rather because that's what you're asking for, you want to do evil, you want to run away, therefore I will not listen to you at all. Immediately he ordered them to be expelled from there, as it is written: And he expelled them from before Pharaoh.
(כד) וַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לְכוּ֙ עִבְד֣וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה רַ֛ק צֹאנְכֶ֥ם וּבְקַרְכֶ֖ם יֻצָּ֑ג גַּֽם־טַפְּכֶ֖ם יֵלֵ֥ךְ עִמָּכֶֽם׃(כה) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֔ה גַּם־אַתָּ֛ה תִּתֵּ֥ן בְּיָדֵ֖נוּ זְבָחִ֣ים וְעֹל֑וֹת וְעָשִׂ֖ינוּ לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃(כו) וְגַם־מִקְנֵ֜נוּ יֵלֵ֣ךְ עִמָּ֗נוּ לֹ֤א תִשָּׁאֵר֙ פַּרְסָ֔ה כִּ֚י מִמֶּ֣נּוּ נִקַּ֔ח לַעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ לֹֽא־נֵדַ֗ע מַֽה־נַּעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה עַד־בֹּאֵ֖נוּ שָֽׁמָּה׃ (כז) וַיְחַזֵּ֥ק יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לְשַׁלְּחָֽם׃
(24) Pharaoh then summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the LORD! Only your flocks and your herds shall be left behind; even your children may go with you.”(25) But Moses said, “You yourself must provide us with sacrifices and burnt offerings to offer up to the LORD our God;(26) our own livestock, too, shall go along with us—not a hoof shall remain behind: for we must select from it for the worship of the LORD our God; and we shall not know with what we are to worship the LORD until we arrive there.” (27) But the LORD stiffened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not agree to let them go.
(א) רק צאנכם ובקרכם יצג. לדעת מה בלב משה אם דעתו לברוח. ואמר גם טפכם ילך כמו שאמר לו משה בתחלה בנערינו ובזקנינו נלך
Just leave your sheep and cattle. In order to know what was in Moshe's heart and if he intended to run away. And he said even your children will go, for Moshe said to him earlier we will go with our youth and our old.
(לא) וַיִּקְרָא֩ לְמֹשֶׁ֨ה וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֜ן לַ֗יְלָה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ ק֤וּמוּ צְּאוּ֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ עַמִּ֔י גַּם־אַתֶּ֖ם גַּם־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּלְכ֛וּ עִבְד֥וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה כְּדַבֶּרְכֶֽם׃ (לב) גַּם־צֹאנְכֶ֨ם גַּם־בְּקַרְכֶ֥ם קְח֛וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּרְתֶּ֖ם וָלֵ֑כוּ וּבֵֽרַכְתֶּ֖ם גַּם־אֹתִֽי׃ (לג) וַתֶּחֱזַ֤ק מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ עַל־הָעָ֔ם לְמַהֵ֖ר לְשַׁלְּחָ֣ם מִן־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֥י אָמְר֖וּ כֻּלָּ֥נוּ מֵתִֽים׃
(31) He summoned Moses and Aaron in the night and said, “Up, depart from among my people, you and the Israelites with you! Go, worship the LORD as you said! (32) Take also your flocks and your herds, as you said, and begone! And may you bring a blessing upon me also!” (33) The Egyptians urged the people on, impatient to have them leave the country, for they said, “We shall all be dead.”
Tricking the Egyptians
(לה) וּבְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל עָשׂ֖וּ כִּדְבַ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם כְּלֵי־כֶ֛סֶף וּכְלֵ֥י זָהָ֖ב וּשְׂמָלֹֽת׃ (לו) וַֽיהוָ֞ה נָתַ֨ן אֶת־חֵ֥ן הָעָ֛ם בְּעֵינֵ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם וַיַּשְׁאִל֑וּם וַֽיְנַצְּל֖וּ אֶת־מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (פ)
(35) The Israelites had done Moses’ bidding and borrowed from the Egyptians objects of silver and gold, and clothing. (36) And the LORD had disposed the Egyptians favorably toward the people, and they let them have their request; thus they stripped the Egyptians.
(א) וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (ב) דַּבֵּר֮ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ וְיַחֲנוּ֙ לִפְנֵי֙ פִּ֣י הַחִירֹ֔ת בֵּ֥ין מִגְדֹּ֖ל וּבֵ֣ין הַיָּ֑ם לִפְנֵי֙ בַּ֣עַל צְפֹ֔ן נִכְח֥וֹ תַחֲנ֖וּ עַל־הַיָּֽם׃ (ג) וְאָמַ֤ר פַּרְעֹה֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נְבֻכִ֥ים הֵ֖ם בָּאָ֑רֶץ סָגַ֥ר עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (ד) וְחִזַּקְתִּ֣י אֶת־לֵב־פַּרְעֹה֮ וְרָדַ֣ף אַחֲרֵיהֶם֒ וְאִכָּבְדָ֤ה בְּפַרְעֹה֙ וּבְכָל־חֵיל֔וֹ וְיָדְע֥וּ מִצְרַ֖יִם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵֽן׃ (ה) וַיֻּגַּד֙ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֥י בָרַ֖ח הָעָ֑ם וַ֠יֵּהָפֵךְ לְבַ֨ב פַּרְעֹ֤ה וַעֲבָדָיו֙ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם וַיֹּֽאמרוּ֙ מַה־זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־שִׁלַּ֥חְנוּ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵעָבְדֵֽנוּ׃
(1) The LORD said to Moses: (2) Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea. (3) Pharaoh will say of the Israelites, “They are astray in the land; the wilderness has closed in on them.” (4) Then I will stiffen Pharaoh’s heart and he will pursue them, that I may gain glory through Pharaoh and all his host; and the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD. And they did so. (5) When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his courtiers had a change of heart about the people and said, “What is this we have done, releasing Israel from our service?”
(נ) וישכימו בבוקר כל שרי פרעה ועמם כשבע מאות אלף איש, ויצאו ממצרים ויבוא ביום ההוא עד המקום אשר שם בני ישראל. ויראו כל מצרים והנה משה ואהרון וכל בני ישראל יושבים לפני פי החירות, אוכלים ושותים וחוגגים את חג ה׳. ויאמרו כל מצרים אל בני ישראל, הלא אמרתם דרך שלושת ימים נלך במדבר וזבחנו לאלוקינו ושבנו. ועתה הלא זה חמישה ימים היום שהלכתם, מדוע אין אתם שבים אל אדוניכם. ויען משה ואהרון ויאמרו אליהם, כי העד העיד ה׳ אלוקינו בנו לאמור לא תוסיפו לשוב עוד מצרימה. כי אם אל ארץ זבת חלב ודבש נלכה לנו, כאשר נשבע ה׳ אלוקינו לאבותינו לתת לנו. ויראו כל שרי מצרים כי לא שמעו אליהם כל ישראל לשוב מצרימה, ויתאזרו להילחם עם ישראל. ויחזק ה׳ את לב בני ישראל על מצרים, וילחמו ישראל עם שרי מצרים. ותגבר יד בני ישראל על מצרים, ויכו אותם מכה גדולה. ותכבד המלחמה על מצרים וינוסו כל מצרים לפני בני ישראל, כי מתו מהם רבים ביד בני ישראל. וילכו שרי פרעה מצרימה ויגידו לפרעה לאמור, ברחו בני ישראל להם ולא יוסיפו לשוב מצרימה וכזאת וכזאת דיברו אלינו משה ואהרון. וישמע פרעה את הדבר הזה ויהפך לבבו ולבב כל עבדיו על ישראל, וינחמו כי שלחו את ישראל. ויאמרו כל מצרים אל פרעה לרדוף אחרי בני ישראל, להשיבם לסבלותם. ויאמרו איש אל אחיו, מה זאת עשינו כי שלחנו את ישראל מעבדנו. ויחזק ה׳ את לב כל מצרים לרדוף אחרי ישראל, כי חפץ ה׳ להפיל את כל מצרים בתוך ים סוף. ויקם פרעה ויאסור מרכבתו ויצו ויקבצו את כל מצרים, לא נותר איש כי אם הטף והנשים. ויצאו כל מצרים עם פרעה לרדוף אחרי בני ישראל, ותהי מחנה מצרים מחנה גדול מאוד וכבד כעשר מאות אלף איש. ותלך כל המחנה הזאת וירדפו אחרי בני ישראל להשיבם מצרימה, וישיגו את ישראל חונים על ים סוף.
(50) And they rose up in the morning, all the princes of Pharaoh with their people, about seven hundred thousand men, and the Egyptians went forth on that day, and they came to the place where the children of Israel were encamped, and all the Egyptians saw, and behold Moses and Aaron and all the children of Israel sat before Pi-hachiroth eating and drinking and celebrating the feast of the Lord. And all the Egyptians said unto the children of Israel: Have ye not said: We will go a three days journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to our God and then we will return? And now it is four days since your going away, and why do you not return unto your masters? And Moses and Aaron said unto them: Because the Lord our God hath instructed us saying: Ye shall return no more unto Egypt; but we will go unto a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord our God had sworn to our fathers to give it unto us. And when the princes of Egypt saw that the children of Israel would not listen unto them to return, they assembled to fight with the children of Israel. But the Lord strengthened the hearts of the children of Israel over the Egyptians, and they smote them a great smiting, and the battle was very disastrous upon the Egyptians, and they fled from before the children of Israel for many of them were slain by the hand of Israel. And the princes of Pharaoh went to Egypt unto Pharaoh, and they spoke unto Pharaoh saying: The children of Israel have fled and refuse to return to Egypt, and thus did Moses and Aaron speak unto us. And when Pharaoh heard this thing his heart turned against Israel, and also the hearts of all his servants, and they repented having sent away the Israelites, and all the Egyptians counseled Pharaoh to pursue the children of Israel, and to force them to return to their servitude; and they said to each other: Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us? And the Lord hardened the hearts of the Egyptians to pursue the children of Israel, for it was the pleasure of the Lord to cast all the Egyptians into the Red Sea. And Pharaoh made ready his chariot, and he commanded and they assembled all Egypt, not one man remained, save the children and women. And all Egypt went forth with Pharaoh to pursue the children of Israel, and the army of Egypt was exceedingly large, about one million of men, and this entire army moved on in pursuit of the children of Israel and overtook them encamped by the Red Sea.

"Moshe does not lie to Pharaoh, nor does he deceive him. He simply claims the legitimate right of religious freedom for an oppressed people! Furthermore, God has every intention to actually lead Bnei Yisrael on this journey to worship God at Har Sinai (see 24:5-8, and Ramban & Ibn Ezra on 3:12!). Basically, God can demand that Pharaoh grant religious freedom to an oppressed people, but He can't expect him to act as an ardent supporter of Zionism."
