אַסְיָה f.n. FW Asia. [Gk. Asia, from Akka. aṣū (= to go out; to rise — said of the sun), which is related to Heb. יָצָא (= he went out; it rose — said of the sun). Accordingly Asia orig. denoted ‘the Region of the Rising Sun’ in contradistinction to Europe which orig. meant ‘the Region of the Setting Sun’ (see אֵירוֹפָּה). cp. the second element in אֵירַסְיָה. cp. also Asia and ‘wudu’ in my CEDEL.] Derivative: אַסְיָתִי.
