וַיָּבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיַּצִּ֣יגוּ אֹת֔וֹ בְּת֣וֹךְ הָאֹ֔הֶל אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָטָה־ל֖וֹ דָּוִ֑יד וַיַּקְרִ֛יבוּ עֹל֥וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֥י הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ aWith vv. 1–3, cf. 2 Sam. 6.17–19.They brought in the Ark of God and set it up inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they sacrificed burnt offerings and offerings of well-being before God.
וַיְכַ֣ל דָּוִ֔יד מֵהַעֲל֥וֹת הָעֹלָ֖ה וְהַשְּׁלָמִ֑ים וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהֹוָֽה׃ When David finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and the offerings of well-being, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.
וַיְחַלֵּק֙ לְכׇל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֵאִ֖ישׁ וְעַד־אִשָּׁ֑ה לְאִישׁ֙ כִּכַּר־לֶ֔חֶם וְאֶשְׁפָּ֖ר וַאֲשִׁישָֽׁה׃ And he distributed to every person in Israel—man and woman alike—to each a loaf of bread, bMeaning of Heb. uncertain.a cake made in a pan, and a raisin cake.-b
וַיִּתֵּ֞ן לִפְנֵ֨י אֲר֧וֹן יְהֹוָ֛ה מִן־הַלְוִיִּ֖ם מְשָׁרְתִ֑ים וּלְהַזְכִּיר֙ וּלְהוֹד֣וֹת וּלְהַלֵּ֔ל לַיהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {ס} He appointed Levites to minister before the Ark of the LORD, to invoke, to praise, and to extol the LORD God of Israel:
אָסָ֥ף הָרֹ֖אשׁ וּמִשְׁנֵ֣הוּ זְכַרְיָ֑ה יְעִיאֵ֡ל וּשְׁמִירָמ֡וֹת וִיחִיאֵ֡ל וּמַתִּתְיָ֡ה וֶאֱלִיאָ֡ב וּבְנָיָ֩הוּ֩ וְעֹבֵ֨ד אֱדֹ֜ם וִיעִיאֵ֗ל בִּכְלֵ֤י נְבָלִים֙ וּבְכִנֹּר֔וֹת וְאָסָ֖ף בַּֽמְצִלְתַּ֥יִם מַשְׁמִֽיעַ׃ Asaph the chief, Zechariah second in rank, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with harps and lyres, and Asaph sounding the cymbals,
וּבְנָיָ֥הוּ וְיַחֲזִיאֵ֖ל הַכֹּהֲנִ֑ים בַּחֲצֹצְר֣וֹת תָּמִ֔יד לִפְנֵ֖י אֲר֥וֹן בְּרִית־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests, with trumpets, regularly before the Ark of the Covenant of God.
בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא אָ֣ז נָתַ֤ן דָּוִיד֙ בָּרֹ֔אשׁ לְהֹד֖וֹת לַיהֹוָ֑ה בְּיַד־אָסָ֖ף וְאֶחָֽיו׃ {פ}
Then, on that day, David first commissioned Asaph and his kinsmen to give praise to the LORD:
הוֹד֤וּ לַֽיהֹוָה֙ קִרְא֣וּ בִשְׁמ֔וֹ {ס} הוֹדִ֥יעוּ בָעַמִּ֖ים עֲלִילֹתָֽיו׃ cWith vv. 8–22, cf. Ps. 105.1–15.“Praise the LORD;
call on His name;
proclaim His deeds among the peoples.
שִׁ֤ירוּ לוֹ֙ זַמְּרוּ־ל֔וֹ {ס} שִׂ֖יחוּ בְּכׇל־נִפְלְאֹתָֽיו׃ Sing praises unto Him;
speak of all His wondrous acts.
הִֽתְהַלְלוּ֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם קׇדְשׁ֔וֹ {ס} יִשְׂמַ֕ח לֵ֖ב מְבַקְשֵׁ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ Exult in His holy name;
let all who seek the LORD rejoice.
דִּרְשׁ֤וּ יְהֹוָה֙ וְעֻזּ֔וֹ {ס} בַּקְּשׁ֥וּ פָנָ֖יו תָּמִֽיד׃ Turn to the LORD, to His might;dI.e., the Ark; cf. Pss. 78.61; 132.8.
seek His presence constantly.
זִכְר֗וּ נִפְלְאֹתָיו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֔ה {ס} מֹפְתָ֖יו וּמִשְׁפְּטֵי־פִֽיהוּ׃ Remember the wonders He has done;
His portents and the judgments He has pronounced,
זֶ֚רַע יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל עַבְדּ֔וֹ {ס} בְּנֵ֥י יַעֲקֹ֖ב בְּחִירָֽיו׃ O offspring of Israel, His servant,
O descendants of Jacob, His chosen ones.
ה֚וּא יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ {ס} בְּכׇל־הָאָ֖רֶץ מִשְׁפָּטָֽיו׃ He is the LORD our God;
His judgments are throughout the earth.
זִכְר֤וּ לְעוֹלָם֙ בְּרִית֔וֹ {ס} דָּבָ֥ר צִוָּ֖ה לְאֶ֥לֶף דּֽוֹר׃ Be ever mindful of His covenant,
the promise He gave for a thousand generations,
אֲשֶׁ֤ר כָּרַת֙ אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֔ם {ס} וּשְׁבוּעָת֖וֹ לְיִצְחָֽק׃ that He made with Abraham,
swore to Isaac,
וַיַּעֲמִידֶ֤הָ לְיַֽעֲקֹב֙ לְחֹ֔ק {ס} לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּרִ֥ית עוֹלָֽם׃ and confirmed in a decree for Jacob,
for Israel, as an eternal covenant,
לֵאמֹ֗ר לְךָ֙ אֶתֵּ֣ן אֶֽרֶץ־כְּנָ֔עַן {ס} חֶ֖בֶל נַחֲלַתְכֶֽם׃ saying,‘To you I will give the land of Canaan
as your allotted heritage.’
בִּהְיֽוֹתְכֶם֙ מְתֵ֣י מִסְפָּ֔ר {ס} כִּמְעַ֖ט וְגָרִ֥ים בָּֽהּ׃ You were then few in number,
a handful, merely sojourning there,
וַיִּֽתְהַלְּכוּ֙ מִגּ֣וֹי אֶל־גּ֔וֹי {ס} וּמִמַּמְלָכָ֖ה אֶל־עַ֥ם אַחֵֽר׃ wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
לֹֽא־הִנִּ֤יחַ לְאִישׁ֙ לְעׇשְׁקָ֔ם {ס} וַיּ֥וֹכַח עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מְלָכִֽים׃ He allowed no one to oppress them;
He reproved kings on their account,
אַֽל־תִּגְּעוּ֙ בִּמְשִׁיחָ֔י {ס} וּבִנְבִיאַ֖י אַל־תָּרֵֽעוּ׃ {פ}
‘Do not touch My anointed ones;
do not harm My prophets.’
שִׁ֤ירוּ לַֽיהֹוָה֙ כׇּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ {ס} בַּשְּׂר֥וּ מִיּֽוֹם־אֶל־י֖וֹם יְשׁוּעָתֽוֹ׃ eWith vv. 23–33, cf. Ps. 96.1–13.“Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
proclaim His victory day after day.
סַפְּר֤וּ בַגּוֹיִם֙ אֶת־כְּבוֹד֔וֹ {ס} בְּכׇל־הָעַמִּ֖ים נִפְלְאֹתָֽיו׃ Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wondrous deeds among all peoples.
כִּי֩ גָד֨וֹל יְהֹוָ֤ה וּמְהֻלָּל֙ מְאֹ֔ד {ס} וְנוֹרָ֥א ה֖וּא עַל־כׇּל־אֱלֹהִֽים׃ For the LORD is great and much acclaimed,
He is held in awe by all divine beings.
כִּ֠י כׇּל־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הָֽעַמִּים֙ אֱלִילִ֔ים {ס} וַיהֹוָ֖ה שָׁמַ֥יִם עָשָֽׂה׃ All the gods of the peoples are mere idols,
but the LORD made the heavens.
ה֤וֹד וְהָדָר֙ לְפָנָ֔יו {ס} עֹ֥ז וְחֶדְוָ֖ה בִּמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ Glory and majesty are before Him;
strength and joy are in His place.
הָב֤וּ לַֽיהֹוָה֙ מִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת עַמִּ֔ים {ס} הָב֥וּ לַיהֹוָ֖ה כָּב֥וֹד וָעֹֽז׃ “Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
הָב֥וּ לַֽיהֹוָ֖ה כְּב֣וֹד שְׁמ֑וֹ {ס} שְׂא֤וּ מִנְחָה֙ וּבֹ֣אוּ לְפָנָ֔יו הִשְׁתַּחֲו֥וּ לַֽיהֹוָ֖ה בְּהַדְרַת־קֹֽדֶשׁ׃ {ס} Ascribe to the LORD the glory of His name,
bring tribute and enter before Him,
bow down to the LORD majestic in holiness.
חִ֤ילוּ מִלְּפָנָיו֙ כׇּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אַף־תִּכּ֥וֹן תֵּבֵ֖ל בַּל־תִּמּֽוֹט׃ {ס} Tremble in His presence, all the earth!
The world stands firm; it cannot be shaken.
יִשְׂמְח֤וּ הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְתָגֵ֣ל הָאָ֔רֶץ וְיֹאמְר֥וּ בַגּוֹיִ֖ם יְהֹוָ֥ה מָלָֽךְ׃ {ס} Let the heavens rejoice and the earth exult;
let them declare among the nations, “The LORD is King!”
יִרְעַ֤ם הַיָּם֙ וּמְלוֹא֔וֹ יַעֲלֹ֥ץ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁר־בּֽוֹ׃ {ס} Let the sea and all within it thunder,
the fields and everything in them exult;
אָ֥ז יְרַנְּנ֖וּ עֲצֵ֣י הַיָּ֑עַר מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה כִּי־בָ֖א לִשְׁפּ֥וֹט אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {ס} then shall all the trees of the forest shout for joy
at the presence of the LORD,
for He is coming to rule the earth.
הוֹד֤וּ לַֽיהֹוָה֙ כִּ֣י ט֔וֹב כִּ֥י לְעוֹלָ֖ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃ {ס} Praise the LORD for He is good;
His steadfast love is eternal.
וְאִמְר֕וּ הוֹשִׁיעֵ֙נוּ֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׁעֵ֔נוּ וְקַבְּצֵ֥נוּ וְהַצִּילֵ֖נוּ מִן־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם {ס} לְהֹדוֹת֙ לְשֵׁ֣ם קׇדְשֶׁ֔ךָ לְהִשְׁתַּבֵּ֖חַ בִּתְהִלָּתֶֽךָ׃ {ס} fCf. Ps. 106.47–48.Declare:
Deliver us, O God, our deliverer,
and gather us and save us from the nations,
to acclaim Your holy name,
to glory in Your praise.
בָּר֤וּךְ יְהֹוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִן־הָעוֹלָ֖ם וְעַ֣ד הָעֹלָ֑ם וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ כׇל־הָעָם֙ אָמֵ֔ן {ס} וְהַלֵּ֖ל לַיהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}
Blessed is the LORD, God of Israel, from eternity to eternity.” And all the people said, “Amen” and “Praise the LORD.”-f
וַיַּעֲזׇב־שָׁ֗ם לִפְנֵי֙ אֲר֣וֹן בְּרִית־יְהֹוָ֔ה לְאָסָ֖ף וּלְאֶחָ֑יו לְשָׁרֵ֞ת לִפְנֵ֧י הָאָר֛וֹן תָּמִ֖יד לִדְבַר־י֥וֹם בְּיוֹמֽוֹ׃ He left Asaph and his kinsmen there before the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD to minister before the Ark regularly as each day required,
וְעֹבֵ֥ד אֱדֹ֛ם וַאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם שִׁשִּׁ֣ים וּשְׁמוֹנָ֑ה {ס} וְעֹבֵ֨ד אֱדֹ֧ם בֶּן־יְדִית֛וּן וְחֹסָ֖ה לְשֹׁעֲרִֽים׃ as well as Obed-edom with their kinsmen—68; also Obed-edom son of Jedithun and Hosah as gatekeepers;
וְאֵ֣ת ׀ צָד֣וֹק הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְאֶחָיו֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים לִפְנֵ֖י מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהֹוָ֑ה בַּבָּמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּגִבְעֽוֹן׃ also Zadok the priest and his fellow priests before the Tabernacle of the LORD at the shrine which was in Gibeon;
לְֽהַעֲלוֹת֩ עֹל֨וֹת לַיהֹוָ֜ה עַל־מִזְבַּ֧ח הָעֹלָ֛ה תָּמִ֖יד לַבֹּ֣קֶר וְלָעָ֑רֶב וּלְכׇל־הַכָּתוּב֙ בְּתוֹרַ֣ת יְהֹוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖ה עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ to sacrifice burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of the burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with what was prescribed in the Teaching of the LORD with which He charged Israel.
וְעִמָּהֶם֙ הֵימָ֣ן וִידוּת֔וּן וּשְׁאָר֙ הַבְּרוּרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִקְּב֖וּ בְּשֵׁמ֑וֹת לְהֹדוֹת֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה כִּ֥י לְעוֹלָ֖ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃ With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the other selected men designated by name to give praise to the LORD, “For His steadfast love is eternal.”
וְעִמָּהֶם֩ הֵימָ֨ן וִידוּת֜וּן חֲצֹצְר֤וֹת וּמְצִלְתַּ֙יִם֙ לְמַשְׁמִיעִ֔ים וּכְלֵ֖י שִׁ֣יר הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וּבְנֵ֥י יְדוּת֖וּן לַשָּֽׁעַר׃ Heman and Jeduthun had with them trumpets and cymbals to sound, and instruments for the songs of God; and the sons of Jeduthun were to be at the gate.
וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ כׇל־הָעָ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ לְבֵית֑וֹ וַיִּסֹּ֥ב דָּוִ֖יד לְבָרֵ֥ךְ אֶת־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ {פ}
Then all the people went every one to his home, and David returned to greet his household.
