At the beginning of the 8/18/1901 cornerstone laying.

(10) And the LORD said: ‘Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow, which came up in a night, and perished in a night;

(1) A Song of Ascents; of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

The synagogue's motto (quoted in the 1/28/1934 speech at the 40th anniversary banquet, but from a 1901 speech not yet translated from Yiddish)

(1) Now the LORD said unto Abram: ‘Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto the land that I will show thee. (2) And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing. (3) And I will bless them that bless thee, and him that curseth thee will I curse; and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’

Connecting Abraham to the synagogue's charter members at the beginning of the 50th banquet speech from 3/19/1944.

This next set of sources are ones I draw upon when discussing the synagogue's history.

(5) In a place where there are no men [to do what is right]; strive to be that man.

(16) It is not up to you to finish the work, but you are not free to abandon it.

Prayer for the Congregation

May He who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, bless this entire congregation, together with all holy congregations: them, their sons and daughters, their families, and all that is theirs, along with those who unite to establish synagogues for prayer, and those who enter them to pray, and those who give funds for heat and light, and wine for Kiddush and Havdalah, bread to the wayfarer and charity to the poor, and all who devotedly involve themselves with the needs of this community and the Land of Israel. May the Holy One Praised be He reward them; may He remove sickness from them, heal them, and forgive their sins. May He bless them by prospering all their worthy endeavors, as well as those of the entire people Israel. And let us say: Amen.
