(ד) (תהלים סח, ז): אֱלֹהִים מוֹשִׁיב יְחִידִים בַּיְתָה, מַטְרוֹנָה שָׁאֲלָה אֶת רַבִּי יוֹסֵי בַּר חֲלַפְתָּא אָמְרָה לוֹ לְכַמָּה יָמִים בָּרָא הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֶת עוֹלָמוֹ, אָמַר לָהּ לְשֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים, כְּדִכְתִיב (שמות כ, יא): כִּי שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים עָשָׂה ה' אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ. אָמְרָה לוֹ מַה הוּא עוֹשֶׂה מֵאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה וְעַד עַכְשָׁו, אָמַר לָהּ, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא יוֹשֵׁב וּמְזַוֵּג זִוּוּגִים, בִּתּוֹ שֶׁל פְּלוֹנִי לִפְלוֹנִי.... אָמַר לָהּ ...קָשָׁה הִיא לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא כִּקְרִיעַת יַם סוּף.
(4) "God returns the solitary ones homeward" (Psalms 58:7). A Roman Matron asked Rabbi Yosi ben Halafta, "In how many days did God create the world?" He said, "In six, as it is said, 'Since six days God made...' (Exodus 20:11) "And since then," she asked, "what has God been doing?" "God sits and pairs couples: the daughter of this one to that one.... R. Yosi said further..., for God it is as difficult as splitting the Sea of Reeds."
(א) ויבאו בני ישראל בתוך הים ביבשה,
אמרו לו רבי למדנו באי זו זכות זכה יהודה למלכות אמר להם כשעמדו שבטים על הים זה אומר איני יורד תחלה וזה אומר איני יורד תחלה ... קפץ נחשון בן עמינדב ושבטו אחריו לתוך גלי הים לפיכך זכה למלכות
(1) (Exodus 14:22) "And the children of Israel came in the midst of the sea on the dry land":
Master, tell us. in what merit did he attain to kingship? When the tribes were at the sea, each one said: I will not go down first, .... Nachshon the son of Aminadav and his tribe after him leapt into the waves of the sea — wherefore he merited kingship.
