VaYeche - Now and Then
(22) And now, I assign to you one portion more than to your brothers, which I wrested from the Amorites with my sword and bow.”

WITH MY SWORD AND WITH MY BOW — When Shimon and Levi slew the inhabitants of Shechem all the surrounding nations gathered together to join in battle against them and Jacob girded on his weapons to war against them (cf. Genesis Rabbah 80:10)...

That I took - That Israel will take with their sword and bow...And don't wonder about the word "I took", because after Hashem gave to the mouth of Avraham, they were considered as if it belonged to them...

(2) אשר לקחתי, “which I have taken;” That I will take this in the days of Joshua with sword and bow. The use by Yaakov of the past tense here is parallel to the money used for the purchase of the cave of Machpelah, when Avraham had said: נתתי כסף השדה קח ממני, “I have already given the money for the field, accept it from me.” (Genesis 23,13) Furthermore it was considered in the eyes of Yaakov as if he has taken it already since G-d assured it.

With sword and bow. The verse can't leave it's simple meaning, therefore certainly through a war he took it. But we don't know when. And perhaps it was when they killed Shechem, the surrounding nations fought with them.

From the hands of the Amorite with my sword and bow - with the war of Yehoshua...

The baraita cites additional related verses: And with regard to Jacob’s bequest to Joseph, the verse states: “Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow” (Genesis 48:22). The baraita explains the verse: But is it so that Jacob took the portion with his sword and with his bow? But isn’t it already stated: “...For I trust not in my bow, neither can my sword save me” (Psalms 44:6–7)? Rather, what is the meaning of “with my sword”? This is referring to prayer. What is the meaning of “with my bow”? This is referring to petition.
