(ז) נִתַּאי הָאַרְבֵּלִי אוֹמֵר, הַרְחֵק מִשָּׁכֵן רָע, וְאַל תִּתְחַבֵּר לָרָשָׁע, וְאַל תִּתְיָאֵשׁ מִן הַפֻּרְעָנוּת:
(7) Nitai of Arbel says: "Distance [yourself] from a bad neighbor, do not befriend an evildoer and do not despair of punishment."
(ב) וְאַל כוּ'. וְלֹא אָמַר שֶׁיִּדְאַג מִן הַפֻּרְעָנוּת, כִּי דָּבָר זֶה מִדָּה מְגֻנָּה מִי שֶׁהוּא דּוֹאֵג מִן הַפֻּרְעָנוּת. אֲבָל אַל יִתְיָאֵשׁ כוּ' כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הָמָן שֶׁהָיָה בָּטוּחַ בְּגֹדֶל עָשְׁרוֹ וּכְהֶרֶף עַיִן נֶהֱפַךְ עָלָיו הַצְלָחָתוֹ. וְזֶהוּ לְשׁוֹן וְאַל תִּתְיָאֵשׁ. דֶּרֶךְ חַיִּים: (עיקר תוי"ט).
(2) "and do not, etc.": And it does not say that he should worry about punishment, since such a thing is a bad trait - the one who worries about punishment; but [rather], "do not despair, etc." Which is what Haman did when he relied upon his great wealth, and in the blink of an eye, his success reversed itself upon him. And this is [the meaning] of the expression, 'do not despair' - Derekh Chaim.
