ועשו סייג לתורה. .... איזהו סייג שעשה אדם הראשון לדבריו הרי הוא אומר (בראשית ב) ויצו ה׳ אלהים על האדם [לאמר] מכל עץ הגן אכול תאכל ומעץ הדעת טוב ורע לא תאכל ממנו כי ביום אכלך ממנו מות תמות לא רצה אדם הראשון לומר לחוה כדרך שא״ל הקב״ה אלא כך אמר לה ועשה סייג לדבריו יותר ממה שאמר לו הקב״ה ומפרי העץ אשר בתוך הגן אמר אלהים לא תאכלו ממנו ולא תגעו בו פן תמותון שרצה לשמור את עצמו ואת חוה מן העץ אפילו בנגיעה. באותה שעה היה נחש הרשע נטל עצה בלבו אמר הואיל ואיני יכול להכשיל את האדם אלך ואכשיל את חוה. הלך וישב אצלה והרבה שיחה עמה אמר לה אם לנגיעה את אומרת צוה עלינו הקב״ה הריני נוגע בו ואיני מת אף את אם תגעי בו אי את מתה. מה עשה הנחש הרשע באותה שעה עמד ונגע באילן בידיו וברגליו והרתיעו עד שנשרו פירותיו לארץ (ויש אומרים לא נגע בו כל עיקר אלא) כיון שראהו אותו אילן היה צווח עליו ואמר לו רשע רשע אל תגע בי שנאמר (תהלים לו) אל תבואני רגל גאוה ויד רשעים אל תנדני:
Make a fence around the Torah....What fence did Adam the First Man make around his ( or God's) words? Behold, it says "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you are free to eat; but as for the tree of knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat of it; for as soon as you eat of it, you shall die.”"(Genesis 2:16-17). Adam did not want to speak to Eve in the same manner in which God spoke to him, but rather spoke to her thus, making a fence around his words beyond what God said to him: "It is only about fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said: ‘You shall not eat of it or touch it, lest you die"(Genesis 3:3). For Adam wished to keep himself and his wife even from touching the tree.
At that moment the evil snake took counsel in his mind, saying, "Because I cannot make Adam fail, I shall go and cause Eve to fail." The snake went and sat beside her and engaged her in much conversation. He said to her, "If you say that God commanded us about touching the tree, behold I shall touch it and not die. So too with you: if you touch it, you will not die." What did the evil snake do at that moment? He stood and touched the tree with his hands and feet and shook it until its fruit fell to the ground. Some say that he did not quite touch it but that when that tree saw the snake, it screamed out to him, "Wicked! Wicked! Don't touch me!" as it says, "Let not the foot of the arrogant tread on me, or the hand of the wicked drive me away. "(Psalms 36).
... ושוב אמר לה אם לאכילה את אומר צוה עלינו הקדוש ברוך הוא הריני (אומר) אוכל ממנו ואינו מת ואף את תאכלי ואי את מתה. מה אמרה חוה בדעתה (אמרה חוה בדעתה) כל הדברים שפקדני רבי מתחלה שקר הם לפי שאין חוה קורא לאדם הראשון מתחלה אלא רבי. מיד נטלה ואכלה ונתנה לאדם ואכל שנאמר (בראשית ג) ותרא האשה כי טוב העץ למאכל וכי תאוה הוא לעינים [וגו׳]:
Again the snake said to her, "If you say that God commanded us not to eat from the tree, behold, I will eat from it and not die. So too will you eat from it and not die." What did Eve think? She thought: "Everything that my teacher commanded me from the beginning was a lie." (For at first Even would only called Adam her teacher.) Immediately she took fruit and ate it and gave it to Adam who also ate, as it says, "When the woman saw that the tree was good for eating and a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable as a source of wisdom, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, and he ate" (Genesis 3:6).
Ḥizkiyya says: From where is it derived that anyone who adds, subtracts? It is derived from a verse, as it is stated that Eve said: “God has said: You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it” (Genesis 3:3).
