(15) Cursed be anyone who makes a sculptured or molten image, abhorred by the LORD, a craftsman’s handiwork, and sets it up in secret.—And all the people shall respond, Amen.
(1) These eleven transgressions are specifically mentioned, because they are sins that are committed in private (note the qualifier, and sets it up in secret — since he would be liable for the death penalty if he had done it in public [there is no source in Talmudic literature for this assertion — Translator]; note also, “he who injures his neighbor in secret” [: 24]). Scripture starts with the basis of everything, the relationship toward one’s Maker, and then proceeds to discuss the relationship toward one’s parents (for who would know, if someone insulted his parents?).
