(א) מֵרֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֱלוּל עַד אַחַר יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים, הֵמָּה יְמֵי רָצוֹן. . . יָמִים אֵלּוּ מֻבְחָרִים יוֹתֵר וּמְזֻמָּנִים לִתְשׁוּבָה, לִהְיֹתָם יְמֵי רַחֲמִים וִימֵי רָצוֹן, . . . וּמִנְהָג בְּרֹב הַמְּקוֹמוֹת לְהִתְעַנּוֹת בְּעֶרֶב רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֱלוּל וְלַעֲשׂוֹת סֵדֶר יוֹם כִּפּוּר קָטָן, כְּדֵי שֶׁיָּכִינוּ לִבָּם לִתְשׁוּבָה. וְאִם חָל רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ בַּשַׁבָּת, מַקְדִּימִין לְיוֹם חֲמִישִּׁי שֶׁלְּפָנָיו. . . .
(ב) נוֹהֲגִין לִתְקֹעַ שׁוֹפָר בְּחֹדֶשׁ זֶה. וּמַתְחִילִין בְּיוֹם בּ' דְּרֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ וְתוֹקְעִין בְּכָל יוֹם לְאַחַר תְּפִלַּת שַׁחֲרִית תְּקִיעָה שְׁבָרִים תְּרוּעָה תְּקִיעָה, חוּץ מֵעֶרֶב רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, שֶׁמַּפְסִיקִין בּוֹ, כְּדֵי לְהַפְסִיק בֵּין תְּקִיעוֹת רְשׁוּת לִתְקִיעוֹת מִצְוָה. וְטַעַם הַתְּקִיעוֹת בְּחֹדֶשׁ זֶה כְּדֵי לְעוֹרֵר אֶת הָעָם לִתְשׁוּבָה, כִּי כֵן הוּא הַטֶּבַע שֶׁל הַשּׁוֹפָר לְעוֹרֵר וּלְהַחְרִיד, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב, אִם יִתָּקַע שׁוֹפָר בָּעִיר וְעָם לֹא יֶחֱרָדוּ. עוֹד נוֹהֲגִין בִּמְדִינוֹת אֵלּוּ מִיּוֹם בּ' דְּרֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֱלוּל עַד שְׁמִינִי עֲצֶרֶת, אוֹמְרִים בַּבֹּקֶר וּבָעֶרֶב לְאַחַר הַתְּפִלָּה, אֶת הַמִּזְמוֹר לְדָוִד ה' אוֹרִי וְיִשְׁעִי. וְהוּא עַל פִּי הַמִּדְרָשׁ, ה' אוֹרִי, בְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה. וְיִשְׁעִי בְּיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים. . . .
(ג) אַנְשֵׁי מַעֲשֶׂה, נוֹהֲגִין לִבְדֹּק בְּחֹדֶשׁ זֶּה תְּפִלִּין וּמְזוּזוֹת שֶׁלָּהֶן. וְכָל אֲשֶׁר יִמָּצֵא שָׁם בֶּדֶק בִּשְׁאָר מִצְוֹת, יְתַקְּנוֹ (מטה אפרים).
(1) From Rosh Chodesh Elul until after Yom Kippur are days of favor . . . these days are special and opportune for teshuvah because they are days of mercy and favor . . . it is the custom in many places to fast on the day before Rosh Chodesh Elul and to say the prayers of Yom Kippur Katan in order to prepare their hearts for teshuvah. If Rosh Chodesh is on Shabbos we do it earlier on Thursday . . .
(2) The custom is to blow the shofar in this month. We start on the second day of Rosh Chodesh and we blow every day after Shachris a tekiah, shevarim, teruah, and tekiah. Except for erev Rosh Hashanah that we stop blowing in order to interrupt between shofar-blowing that is not a mitzvah and ones that are a mitzvah. The reason for blowing during this month is to inspire people to do teshuvah, because the nature of the shofar is to inspire and to bring fear as the Passuk says "if the shofar is blown in the city will the people not tremble?". There is also a custom in these places from the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul until Shmini Atzeres to say in the morning and in the evening after Davening the chapter of Tehillim "L'David Hashem Ori V'Yishi". This is based on the midrash that says "Hashem ori" on Rosh Hashanah and "Yishi" on Yom Kippur . . .
(3) Righteous people have a custom to check their tefillin and mezuzos in this month. And in any area that he finds a weakness in other mitzvos he should fix it.
